We welcome to the cave designer and illustrator Matt Cushman, the artist behind some of our favorite science fiction cutaway illustrations from Star Trek and Star Wars. Matt shares with Adam his new massive cross-section poster of the original USS Enterprise, sized as large as the original 11-foot filming model. We scrutinize the details of this incredible piece and learn all the ways Matt made sense of the interior layout based on what was shown in the original series episodes!

And if you’re bitten by the M&C bug, like me, know that the movie is based on a series of 20 books that are jam-packed with high seas adventure and naval battles. The author is Patrick O’Brian, and he is brilliant!
Warning: you will learn a TON of sailing jargon or you will bounce off these books otherwise! Having this glossary open while reading is strongly advised!
If you like the Captain Kirk adventurer + scientist Spock friendship dynamic, you will love Captain Aubrey and Dr Maturin in these books (and the movie, which is amazing)!
Where does Moby Dick fit into the pantheon of nerdy sailing adventure?
I have not read Moby Dick but, as I understand it, Moby Dick is literary fiction rather than genre fiction, which means it may not have the same kind of appeal for Trekkies that M&C would.
Thinking more of what sailing nerds would take from it, though I think Trekkies would at least be interested in Khan’s reading list.
Ahhh okay. I’m not sure then. I doubt there’s much meat on the bone there. M&C is hardcore sailing nerd stuff. “Sail ho! 2 points off the larboard bow! … all hands to quarters! Set the topgallants and the royals!” I don’t know how much of those technicalities are in Moby Dick.
I think Trekkies (and any other sci-fi nerds) would take right to M&C if they put in a bit of the work. It’s incredibly visual writing, once you get the hang of it.
May be more meat there then you think.
