That connection was around longer than people may think. My first job in IT was 2006 and I swear that it was still the standard for Dell PC’s with the keyboard and mouse that came with them. I wanna say it didnt really switch over to USB fully until around 2010.
I just remember the one thing I hated about it is if you didnt have it plugged in before starting the PC you had to restart once it was because it just wouldnt work unless it was seen at boot.
Oh I know, nothing really truly dies and I think there was a resurgance at one point, but I was more referring to when the default switched to USB at least for business model purchases.

You can still get modern motherboards with PS/2.
And yeah, it isn’t hot-pluggable. I think that probably had as much to do with killing it off as the versatility of USB.
