An international team of scientists has reviewed recent advances in sodium-ion battery components, highlighting their potential as a lower-cost, more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries. The researchers identify key challenges including lower energy density, shorter cycle life and manufacturing constraints, while pointing to advances in materials and electrolytes as important to future commercialization.
Sodium cells also cost half as much to produce. Better cold-weather performance and charging to 80% in 15 minutes seem to tip the scale in their favor in many people’s minds. Not to mention sodium being much more abundant and available than lithium. Categorically saying they’re a poor choice for a car disagrees with multiple car companies - you must know more than they do.
