I thought the same, but then the main character in X-Com games is the ‘commander’. I’m still chugging along and dunno if the commander has any unpleasant fate themself, no spoilers please.
Don’t worry; I don’t know any spoilers. I’m playing the 1995 DOS game from Microprose, and I didn’t come across a commander yet. All characters are soldiers, and 80% of them are cannon fodder that locates the aliens, which then I snipe with my few trained survivors from the distance.
I mean the player giving orders in the HQ and on the field. In the 2012 quasi-remake they’s addressed by staff and soldiers as ‘commander’, if I’m not forgetting anything. (The 2012 version is available on PS Vita, which happens to be convenient for me.)
Gotta say, your tactical approach sounds bloodier than mine. I just have them run from cover to cover nearly always, keep the squad vaguely close but separate, and then shower the targets with bullets. But Wikipedia says that the remake places more emphasis on the cover, and I don’t quite remember how it was in the original games.
