Anti-trans messaging isn't the path to re-election that Rep. Marcy Kaptur thinks it is - LGBTQ Nation

Given so many fat issues to whack Republicans with, the longest serving woman in Congress chooses to echo the GOP instead.

“We’re stuck in another unnecessary war and inflation is making everything more expensive, but my opponent won’t talk about all that,” Kaptur says in one ad. “He’d rather lie about my record. Well, here’s the truth: I voted with Republicans to keep transgender ideology out of our schools, because parents know what’s best for their kids – and boys should not play girls’ sports.”

There are so many things wrong with the ad – starting with accepting the GOP framing of rights as an “ideology” – that it’s hard to know where to begin. The second ad is just as bad. In that one, Kaptur brags about being a would-be Republican.

“I’ve repeatedly said no to my own party,” she proclaims. “No to defunding the police. No to open border policies. And no to teaching gender ideology in schools. I work for you.”

Putting aside the fact that defunding the police was never a Democratic Party policy, the ad continues to position Kaptur as sympathetic to Republican concerns.

    ABWD: Any blue won’t do.

    If they aren’t the right kinds of Democrats, don’t support them.

        That’s the problem with “blue no matter who.” These rat bastards hide their colors in the primary. They wait to the general and start flying the terf flag. Then they browbeat trans people and their allies saying, “well, you have to vote for me. What are you going to do, vote for a Republican? If you don’t vote for me, you must support Trump and Republicans!”

        Of course, if people do vote for them and they win the general, the next primary isn’t actually useful to get rid of them then either. A that point, the same mouth-breathing liberals will change their tune. Instead of “vote her out in the primary,” the tune changes to, “well, we can’t lose an incumbent seat in a purple state, not for something as trivial as trans rights!” And all the donors will support the transphobe, as they’re the incumbent.

        To a lot of liberals here on lemmy, there is simply never an acceptable time to vote out the bigots. We’re just supposed to sit down, shut up, and ignore it as the party gets taken over by raging bigots.

      I recall this rhetoric, like I recall DNC looking for the mythical centrist. A shade of blue murder is still murder.
