What’s funny is that Zune’s media player was actually pretty solid. Had the last model before they gave up. Used it for a while in the waning days of Winamp.
It has some minor irritations, but, overall, it feels like its been dogfooded.
I tried one of the cheapie $20-$30 ones from Amazon and it was clear they just threw the software together.
If UI is your thing, there’s an opensource jukebox with an apparently impeccable UI, but you have to get a compatible player and that means buying used because by the time they make firmware for a player, its no longer in production. It also doesn’t support Bluetooth, which I thought I absolutely needed when I was getting started, but now I’ve got more wires in my life.
I still have my 2 Zunes. They don’t work and one day I might be brave enough to try replacing the battery. Until then, they sit on my shelf and mock me.

Not too late to start owning your music again! My pick for a modern player is Snowsky Echo Mini.

I never had a Zune, which is a bummer. I had a Creative Zen player, which was decent, but not a Zune
