Let’s preface with the fact that I’m a tech idiot, so please bear with me if I don’t immediatly understand something or need an ELI5 ^^°

Why I’m asking: I moderate some communities that are basically dead. I tried to kickstart them years ago by posting tons of images, guides and other content that I’d originally posted on reddit and had since taken down before I nuked my account there, but I’ve run out of things to post on Lemmy long ago and submissions from regular users are scarce.

However, I also have a youtube channel with hundreds of videos that might give a little bit of life back to those communities if I started posting them here.

I just don’t know whether this is actually a good idea, or if it might be a far too big strain on the servers for too little payoff. I’d like to breathe back life into the communities but NOT at the cost of indirectly hurting the Fediverse in any way.

…and I don’t really want to just post links to those videos either, as I would prefer to NOT redirect users to a different site. The main goal is to get people to enjoy spending time here, after all.

    Hosted elsewhere I don’t think is much of a problem. Hosted on Lemmy could quickly become a problem for both the original instance and others as your post propagates out. If you want to help the Fediverse, putting the videos on a PeerTube instance might be a good idea.

      Any Lemmy server that cares about space or bandwidth has image and video proxying disabled. That means that all images and videos stay where they were originally uploaded.
