From Rocky Point Bird Observatory
The first owl at the Rocky Point station was a total surprise - a Long-eared Owl! In the past several years we have been lucky to catch one during the season, but it is not a given. This owl species is particularly cryptic & not a lot is known about them here in North America. In order to safely band and weigh larger owls, we put them in a wrap which keeps them calm.

“I wanna get weighed, I wanna get weighed!” said the Owl
“So how was your visit to the Observatory?”
“Wousy,” said the Owl.
Nobody likes that number coming back higher than expected!
Too many mice, not enough rice!
Subtract two pounds for the wrap!
I wonder if they’d get anything out of a weighted blanket… 🤔
The woman has both a sweater and a vest with images of birds.
In a world of crazy cat ladies and puppy parents, there is no shortage of bird nerds! I’m a cheap bastard usually, so I try to only get reeeeeeally special owl stuff, but I did just drop way too much money on a handmade felted opossum for my car…
Got a matching one for my clinic partner in crime also so we could match. 😊
