Most people in East Europe in the 1930-es didn’t think it likely that the rest of the century will be spent under the yoke of various dictatorships. Most people in Weimar Germany didn’t think that the Nazis are a serious threat. There are probably other examples I am less familiar with.
Everything is possible, that doesn’t necessarily make it likely. Some things can be so unlikely they are not worth considering.
