Pretty fun alternative to Black Mesa for a “modernized” Half-Life experience. The feel of the GoldSource engine is simply impossible to replicate.

I loved HL2 MMod, didn’t care for HL1 MMod. I think I’d enjoy playing it if the enemy placements were a bit more well thought out. I’m not going to go too far into it, as I’m sure at least some of it has annoyed you as well. I’m good with the other changes made, and I do respect the team behind HL1 MMod, but the enemies often feel… out of place.
What do you mean? I’ve noticed it does like to hide headcrab zombies near item pickups or in shadows as “gotchas” but they haven’t actually done any really damage and they don’t feel immersion breaking to me. Otherwise there were some rocket launcher placements in the on a rail sequence that seemed only beatable if you jumped out of the cart before seeing the launchers and were already scoped in on them instantly. Those are the only things that really stick out though.
Have you played Half-Life without mods before?
Yes, I played through the base game and all the expansion packs about a year ago last time.
And the placements of the enemies in non-combat sections didn’t bother you at all?
No, not really. If anything occasional enemies spiced up puzzle areas. Given the context of the setting, no enemies seem out of place anywhere in the facility. I’d only be annoyed if enemies were making puzzles needlessly difficult, or if the extra enemies were sponging away all my ammo but since neither has happened I haven’t felt any problems.
Either way, it’s not great for new players because of how enemies are introduced.
