Okay, so apparently Hamas is fighting for the liberation of the thousands and thousands of people who have been detained without any charges and held at the whim of the IDF. Many of those are children, which is another aspect of this genocide.

You seem to have a more nuanced view, thank you. What parts of the apartheid system should be given highest priority in terms of dismantlement?

Just because you have some notion of what defines a child does not mean the rest of the world abides by that. Hamas will recruit kids as young as 14. Even in the US if someone under 18 commits a heinous crime, they are often tried as adults.

I believe I’m following the UN definition of genocide here. And yes, a country should put offending children through the legal processes to rehabilitate them. An invading army should not round up thousands and thousands of minors and keep them detained outside of any legal framework (and no, the whims of the invading military force is not a legal framework). Human rights organizations have been calling out Israel for years. This genocide has to stop.

First, children includes Hamas fighters who officially recruit at 16 and unofficially recruit younger. More than 50% of the gaza population is younger than 18 simply due to the birth rates for the last twenty years. Gaza’s birthrate is absolutely massive, families of 5+ kids are extremely common since that’s the average fertility right now.

The rate of children being killed is actually lower than the overall population at the moment, Israel is obviously doing something to reduce indescriminate killing.

The first thing that needs to happen for this to be fixed is that Iran needs to stop funding Hamas. While Israel does absolutely detain people, they’re suspected of being terrorists. Most countries do this, it just so happens thay Israel has a lot more of them because there’s a massive organization being against them. This fight from Hamas isn’t about freeing the fighters, and everyone in politics knows it. Hamas started attacking Israel before these captures occurred, just after they took power themselves in a bloody internal fight.

From Israels perspective, realistically, they need to stop the tunnels and smuggling networks from operating. Iran is never going to stop, it’s by far their best way to indirectly attack Israel without having to risk their own citizens.

I guess all your nuance just went out the window. Never mind.

So, basically your view is that

*Israel is doing a decent job because they aren’t killing that many children relative to the overall population. Also, UN laws don’t really apply to this situation.

*The main reason for the unrest is Iran paying money. The Palestinians don’t really have any solid basis for their grievances.

*Israel’s only failing is that they aren’t successful enough militarily in stopping the funding and tunnels. Otherwise Israel is not doing anything else wrong.

Does that sum up your view correctly?

The UN doesn’t have laws. That’s not how it works.

The main reason for the unrest is Israel, the main reason for the violence is Iran’s funding and supply of smuggled weapons. Gaza has no ability to produce or buy these things themselves,.

The best opportunity to resolve this situation is for Palestinians to de-arm. There’s no way that Israel and the western powers are going to accept any other outcome. Palestinians can have their own state, but it’s not going to be allowed to attack Israel.

Unfortunately that’s not likely to happen, Hamas doesn’t care about the best outcome for Palestinians. That’s never been their goal.

This is just the realistic state of things.

So there is absolutely nothing Israel can do to change the situation. It is only the Palestinians’ responsibility to solve all the problems.

                Gotcha.

What do you suggest they do?

Can you come up with a single suggestion in which Hamas and Hezbollah both stop attacking Israeli citizens?

You are starting from two deeply flawed assumptions:

The solution isn’t “stop attacking Israeli citizens.” There is about 70 years of resentment from the Palestinians because of their treatment from the Israelis. Unless you treat this as a whole, you aren’t going to make any progress. Maybe you just don’t care at all for Palestinian life. If so, then you are a part of the problem.

Also, if you think there is one magical action that can solve all these problems, you are setting yourself up for failure. You can’t magically undo 70 years of resentment with one single action (unless all Israelis decide to leave, that may be the one magical solution).

My proposal would include steps to break down the apartheid state and give Palestinians full self determination. A prosperous and independent Palestine is the best path to peace for all involved.

                    • Commit to a solid path to a two-state solution,
                    • provide a huge aide package for the Palestinians for rebuilding, depending on disarmament,
                    • setting up a UN peace keeping force to help Palestinians root out terrorists, set of a defense pact with other countries to provide protection from Israeli aggressions after disarmament
                    • set up war crime tribunals for Hamas and IDF perpetrators,
                    • remove any ability by the IDF for detentions of Palestinians and incursions into Palestinian land
                    • Provide UN support for Palestine to rebuild their civil institutions.
                    • Both sides would need confidence in a legal framework and process to fairly deal with transgressions and the patience as those processes and frameworks are set up and empowered.

I realize that Israeli leaders would hate to see a prosperous and independent Palestinian state, even if it was the best way to achieve peace. It is obvious they prefer the current violence if it means that in the future they could eliminate all the Palestinians from the land.
