    This makes me think of that story I heard about a jester that was sentenced to death for angering the king.

    For whatever reason the king let the jester determine how he would die, so the jester requested death by old age.

    The king thought it was hilarious and let the jester live but banished him from the kingdom.

    I always wondered why the king didn’t just string him up and keep him alive until he died naturally

      If by string him up you mean tie him up, then he would’ve died of starvation or thirst, not old age. (The only definition I can find of stringing someone up seems to be hanged till death, which is its own thing)

        This would involve feeding him and giving him water. But just enough to survive.

        As for the definition thing it might be colloquial. Everyone around where I live refers to stringing someone up as tying someone to a pole or something like that
