Infinite growth on a finite planet. If only someone had been warning us from the beginning…

No, then. There were not people warning us at every possible juncture, for important reasons like they hadn’t even figured out the size of the Earth in order to be concerned yet.

As far as I can tell realising we could actually run out is a pretty 20th century invention, with some anticipation from early biology and the discovery of extinction.

It’s not really important to the debate now, so it’s a bit of a nitpick, but there you go.

Which economic system promotes companies to take an infinite growth approach to business?

              All of them to date.

No, I’m not going to be baited into a debate about capitalism, which is done to death, and suffers from “capitalism” being ill-defined in the first place, after a couple centuries of discussion and redefinition.

Edit: Wait, I thought this was a different thread. I’m still not going to debate “capitalism”, whatever that means today, but sorry for being so grumpy about it.

Yah I never got that. How can companies always grow. It’s just not possible. I imagine we are going to see a decrease in companies, when no one can afford anything extra.

        They can’t. Not forever.

You see, if it’s more than 10 years in the future, the current head guys will be retired anyway. So it’s not actually an issue. /s

What actually has to happen is that growth will eventually slow down, and returns will start to drop across the board, at least on Earth. At that point you might see some previously impractical business ideas becoming economical, which could be interesting.
