This less lethal launcher from UMX, a sub brand of the German company Umarex, has a built in range finder tied to a laser rangefinder that regulates an electronically controlled valve to ensure a projectile is launched pneumatically to hit a target at no greater than 30 joules of impact force.

This ensures that sufficient force is applied to receive the desired effect while mitigating the risk of causing unnecessary damage.

It is designed to fire a variety of capsules including one containing a pepper spray like powder and one that has an ultraviolet markings dye.

how much is 30 joules? how bad does that hurt? guessing enough to drop someone?

Google says a baseball thrown at 80Mph has ~88 joules of kinetic energy.

Idk how that relates to impact force but hopefully someone smarter than me will help.

that gives me so little context lol

but as someone above said, its like a 3 kg weight dropped from 1m

freedom units thats a 7lb weight from around 3 feet

Approximately a gallon of milk dropped from waist height, but with the impact concentrated into an area 18 mm (~3/4 in) across.

Its 0.3 hubble-barns of water dropped from 0.0008 sheppys, concentrated into a circle with a 2-can jimmy griffin index diameter.
I dont know how much clearer i can be

So, it sounds like it could probably pierce skin or permanently destroy an eye for example ? Would it be enough to fracture a skull ?

Edit: thanks for downvoting with no explanation, feels like I’m back to the good old reddit! /s

Maybe I’m off but that sounds like a lot of force concentrated into a tiny area. For reference, I know that when I was doing airsoft, a 2mm, 0.2g pellet expelled at 2J could already do some serious damage if it hit the wrong part of the body.

Probably not fracture the skull but like most moving objects you wouldn’t want it heading towards your eye. Decidedly not something you’d want to get hit with, but definitely preferable to the other options.

Doing some mental math, it should be about the same feeling as getting hit by 3kg from about 1 meter high.

      1J=1N 1N=100g1m 30J=30N=3000g1m

Its about as much energy as a poorly executed punch from an average person but with a significantly smaller contact area.

It’s nonsense. You measure energy in joules, force in newtons. 30 “joules” of impact force makes no sense at all.

If it is 30 joules, the impact force is 30/m, where m is the distance the force works over. If it is actually 30 newtons, the kinetic energy is 30m.

Everyone knows it talks about kinetic energy, the exact same way as people have been talking about projectiles for hundreds of years. You don’t need to “ackchshually” in here for an SI unit and a slight mistake in an article.

Everyone knows it talks about kinetic energy

I was responding to someone specifically asking, and you think they already knew? The fuck, dude.

the exact same way as people have been talking about projectiles for hundreds of years

I can’t tell which is dumber, you baselessly claiming that people have always measured impact force in units of energy rather than force, or you baselessly claiming that anything we’ve always done is ok because we’ve always done it.

You don’t need to “ackchshually” in here

I factually didn’t use that word, as you could see for yourself if you were literate.

They asked “how much is 30 Joules” and you went “it’s nonsense!” despite the fact that it absolutely isn’t nonsense, and is an actual SI unit.

Way to go insulting people when they call you out. I’m sure you are a very pleasant person to be around. I won’t be responding to your subsequent comments because of your behavior.
