We, progressive-minded people, certainly can and will. But this is a quote from a Republican politician. Can’t rightly expect them to get two things right at once.
Would it maintain the journalistic integrity and accuracy of the quote by wording it as “because he [raped] a 17 year-old.”? There are certain circumstances in which such substitutions are permitted, for instance when one would not wish to repeat a slur verbatim.
