I remember not wanting to make an account to play Half Life 2 back in the day, yet here we fucking well are…

Were you hoodwinked into buying HL:2 without needing the account at first?

It’s not on the physical box, so yes.

The only bit that said you needed it, appears to be the card included in the box.

You can go back to Counterstrike for that. Was a free mod for half life, then one day you needed Steam to play it. It’s how Steam was released and part of why there was such massive uptake early. Biggest game in the world at the time.

How has steam experience been for you? I’ve been on steam for about 20 years and don’t recall they doing anything the likes of Sony doing to their customers.

It’s OK. I do miss the Steam sales actually being worthwhile. They used to be really good, where now I mostly use Steam for games bought elsewhere.

I miss ownership. At least I own my Playstation discs. I can trade them with others when I’m done with them. I can still buy games that have been delisted from digital stores.

Can you say the same about your PC games?

+1 to steam sales being more worthwhile back then. I 1000% understand the ownership thing. I don’t think most people had to consider what digital purchases really could mean until Sony pulled purchased content out of people’s libraries.

I personally don’t think Steam is comparable to Sony apart from digital purchases. Steam or Valve aren’t beholden to large share holders because they aren’t publicly traded, I don’t think they’ll have the same objectives as Sony and prioritize their users instead of public shareholders.

I’d be happier if dedicated servers became the norm again for developers. Games wouldn’t disappear at the flick of a switch when servers are decommissioned.

Sony took some headlines for doing it, but there’s loads of stuff disappeared from the Google Play store and I never saw anybody complaining about them.

Rayman Jungle Run and Fiesta Run are two (single player) games I paid for and they’ve vanished. I mean, it’s only a couple of quid, but that doesn’t make it OK.

At least Steam continue to host stuff, even if they’re not allowed to sell it.
