A write-in campaign for President Joe Biden won the New Hampshire Democratic primary Tuesday, after the state was stripped of its delegates by the Democratic National Committee.
Voters who wrote in Biden’s name beat out Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) and self-help author Marianne Williamson, according to three news networks, with early counts of unprocessed write-in ballots outnumbering votes for Phillips by a more-than-three-to-one margin.
Politics is weird sometimes. Here was a thing that by law, didn’t matter. But still, it did kind of matter. By winning write in, it gets harder for the media to pretend that any of the also-rans are relevant to the race.
If someone else had won, that would be the only story today. Nothing would be juicier media than a sitting president losing a primary. The fact that Biden wasn’t on the ballot would fade into the background. Every news headline today would boil down to “trump strong, Biden weak”. And we’d slide just that much closer to dictatorship.

Do you mean the Republicans? As far as I could tell, the major networks basically ignored the Democrat hopefuls
I took pohl to mean if biden had not won it would have been a big news item but now its not much of one.

Why wouldn’t they?
The DNC stripped NH of their delegates because the Republicans in charge of the state government wouldn’t change the state law that says NH has to hold their primary first. So the Dem primary results literally don’t matter…
What’s weird is the major networks are ignoring that and acting like Biden winning zero delegates means anything.
It’s ironic, because under fascism, they wouldn’t be able to be journalists. They’d have to write fake pieces that are approved by the State, and most news orgs would be shut down in service to that.
They’re digging their own graves.
I would be impressed by this, but I remember when Lisa Murkowski was not on the ballot and still won by write in for the Senate from Alaska. You had to spell her name exactly.
The DNC removed all of NH delegates tho…
Because the NH republicans who control the state house, Senate, and governship wouldn’t change the law that says NH has to be first for primaries.
So the only people who voted in the dem primary, was Biden supporters who wanted to claim Biden finally won NH by doing this in a primary that literally doesn’t matter…
In 2016 and 2020, the party favorite came in last and the most progressive candidate won.
It’s incredibly disappointing to see the media ignore all that and run with “Biden won!”
But it’s even more disappointing how many replies I’ve gotten in the last 24 hours by people who claim to be dem voters and are 100% ok with an entire state being stripped of their primary because the Republicans who control their state wouldn’t give in to the DNCs demands so the DNC and Biden canceled the primary
If Trump and the RNC did this. We’d all be in agreement that this is a frighting time for American democracy
Seems to me that New Hampshire Democrats have two enemies in this fight, the DNC and New Hampshire Republican Legislature. They don’t have much sway over the DNC, but they do get to vote for state representatives.
Why are you pushing the narrative that Biden cancelled their primary? Parties have absolute discretion over how nominees are nominated, and New Hampshire does not have any right to claim the first primary. Why isn’t your diatribe about how Republicans are disenfranchising New Hampshire Democrats? Why are you giving them a pass?
Because concern trolling is the biggest way to get non-Republican voters to stay home. This whole “scandal” that’s been known about a year ahead of time is an easy story to push the agenda. Because most people won’t have paid attention to the years of lead up to the DNC finally making this change.
And really every other state should be pissed inconsequential ones like Iowa and New Hampshire go first. And always threaten to move themselves further forward to stay first. All states should go at the same time, or all within a couple weeks, to avoid candidates dropping out early.
But you’ll see much more of the “boo hoo DNC bad” for weeks because of the easy ability to concern troll.
I’ve been saying it for a while now,
Republicans are literally going to start hunting queer folks for sport, and the white left are going to be here lecturing us all why that means we should be spending energy being mad at the DNC about it.
Even when Biden tries to do the stuff they claim they want him to do they blame the DNC when it fails the house or senate, blame the DNC when SCOTUS strikes it down, blame the DNC for it being a day of the week ending in y.
It’s the narcissist’s prayer but for manufacturing consent to let more republican victories happen when they could easily have far more power getting what they want by just turning the fuck out more, especially in those primaries they love to fatalistically decry as rigged and “shoving moderates down their throats.”
But turning out consistently is work and they don’t want to do any work they want the world to just stop being bad and do a revolution before presenting them with a chairmanship for their hard work doing a third rate Jean-Paul Marat impression.
All of this is a big fucking problem.
I’m no republican, but I don’t understand why any party should have any say over when a state holds it’s primary. And I don’t understand what the end-goal is to writing in Biden. If the point was to give the Dems the finger by holding a primary anyway (that won’t count) why wouldn’t you write in other Dems, instead of the candidate the party already supports?
I’m no republican, but I don’t understand why any party should have any say over when a state holds it’s primary
Usually the state party decides.
NH is weird because they have a state law saying their primary is first.
The NH state Dem party can’t just ignore that law, even though Biden and the DNC told them too.
And the Republicans with the power to change that law, had zero reason to do so.
So there was absolutely nothing the state party could do.
And if the DNC and Biden didn’t understand that very basic part of our political process… It’s pretty fucking concerning they’re the only thing standing between America and Trump’s second term.
Like, either they have no idea what they’re doing. Or they just ordered a state party to ignore state law to help Biden in a primary election the DNC doesn’t even have to acknowledge the result and Biden has a 99.9999% chance of winning anyways.
There’s just no rational reasoning to explain the DNCs actions. They had zero to gain by doing this.
Except their words in court a few years ago when they said primaries are performative and don’t matter. It seems like they’re getting closer and closer to just appointing someone and telling voters to deal with it.
Which is fucking frightening because they’re the only option besides Republicans and this is going to hurt turnout in the general.
It is concerning that the party claiming to fight fascism is the one doing fascist things.
To be clear, they’re still less fascist than Republicans…
More concerning is they seem happy to watch the Republican party become more fascist, because that allows them to also become more anti-democratic.
As long as they’re slightly to the left, they seem to have zero qualms about how facist they act.
It’s almost like they want to be fascist themselves and are gladly standing by.
Which is why not criticizing them just because they’re still better than Republicans isn’t working.
We need to do what we’ve been telling Republicans voters for decades:
Hold your own politicians to higher standards.
Are they? The Republican primary is pretty freaking open. There’s a sizable amount of Republicans that don’t want Trump, but they aren’t changing rules to make him lose like the Democrats did with Bernie. There’s definitely incompetence that no candidate could be put forth to oppose Trump, that wasn’t just a different color Trump.
I don’t think y’all are disagreeing much, though there is clearly a difference between Biden and Trump, that doesn’t excuse the DNC for actively disenfranchising progressive voters.
