While the presentation still doesn’t feel quite right in the remake – it’s like an external team using brand guidelines to come up with ‘something Mario’ – there are some significant additions here.
Thankfully, while most of its early levels are virtually identical to the original, the game’s fourth world is entirely new to the Switch version – the first of two new worlds in the remake – and it does introduce some original mechanics. The remake also introduces a co-op mode and a casual difficulty, which adds checkpoints, though we can’t imagine many older players will need it to be any easier.
I’ll never understand these articles that act like Nintendo rereleasing games is some new thing. Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, Pokemon… they’ve been doing it for decades because there’s absolutely a market for it. I think you would be hard pressed to find a longtime Nintendo fan that feels negatively about this
When did they re-release SMG?
Assuming SMG is Super Mario Galaxy, that was in 2020 as part of the 3D All Stars collection.
Sadly, Nintendo being Nintendo, thought it would be a great idea to “Disney Vault” it and pull it from sale after just a few months. Only available now if you buy a secondhand physical copy at a huge markup.
Whoops, I meant SMW. There I go, asking the entirely wrong question while trying to be clever.
I don’t remember the year, but I had SMW on the game boy advanced so it was rereleased then.
Oh yeah, I remember that! Dang, that was a long time ago…
I guess it makes sense for people like me who’ve never played the original. Also there’s lots of people who hadn’t been born when this came out and now own a Switch!
Nintendo need to offer something to keep selling Switches before they announce whatever is next, remakes are probably rather easy/cheap to spit out. I wonder why there haven’t been more Zelda remakes on Switch. Where’s the Oracles series in the Link’s Awakening remake engine? 😭
Personally, having such a healthy backlog, I don’t think I’m going to go for this one just now…
I have mentioned it before, Switch is my first Nintendo console, so to be able to play all these games is great for me.
And yes, I agree, they need to keep releasing stuff so that people keep buying Switch, and they also need enough games ready to release on new console so that people try to buy it as soon as possible. So, this makes sense.
I actually skipped Wonder, and Super Mario RPG, but thinking about getting this one. Let’s see…
