Meet Bubo, a special great horned owl with a very interesting story. Bubo’s journey started in Edgerton, Minnesota, when a compassionate couple found him after he fell from his nest in a windstorm. They brought changed his life forever.
In May 2000, Bubo was brought to The Raptor Center and after a physical and behavioral assessment was determined to be not releasable. Even though he didn’t have any physical issues, the time spent with humans made him unable to go back to the wild because Bubo imprinted on the family, self-identifiying with humans, and did not learn the skills necessary of an owl to survive in the wild. So, he found a permanent home at The Raptor Center. Bubo fit into the role of educational ambassador very well during his training and has become an incredible ambassador teaching the public all about great horned owls.

I know many of these places don’t have licensing to be open to the public, so my big project last year was the 50 States of Owls, where I did my best to find one place you could actually go to in every state to see owls up close. Anyone new should go back and look for your state!

Anything to get more attention for these places is great. Since this is through the college, I imagine they get some public money in a roundabout way, but all the rescues/shelters are funded entirely by private donation. I don’t know how they do it on top of all the rescuing.
