My understanding is that it allows you to play planar video from a website, but not (yet?) side-loaded videos that are spherical/hemispherical. And the latter is what these people really wanted for this application.

It works, you just have to adjust a few settings.
Apps > Safari > advanced > features flags
And you need to turn these 3 things on WebXR Device API, WebXR Augmented Reality Module, and WebXR Gamepads Module.

Pretty sure there’s an open standard for VR as well (WebXR), Chrome supports it but Firefox doesn’t.
Lots of smartphones can do VR video too, when you add a set of VR goggles that fit it. Just plain goggles with no electronics that hold the phone in front of lenses that you can strap on your face. It’s simple enough that it should be possible on any VR display system actually.

Yeah that’s what I don’t get. Vr porn videos are a thing, so the only way this could be an issue would be if apple isn’t allowing any 3rd party media apps and doesn’t support playing vr videos on their default app. Which is really, really weird for a vr headset
Maybe it is weird but Apple is master of limiting users’ choice.
It’s almost like apple just takes established products and adds a ton of DRM to them until they are unusable for a large amount of the uses the original product had.
