Putin’s successor has been shadowing Putin for years, and was selected by him and the core leadership. Politically, he is Putin’s clone. It will be a seamless succession.
The issue is escalating where Russia feels the need to use nukes. That is a no win for everyone.
If the other option is just letting Russia run continuously unchecked across sovereign nations, then I guess we eat some nukes. However, Russia knows the first nuke they detonate means not even their liege, China, will defend them.

Nukes are a guaranteed lose - lose option. The Russians don’t want to lose.Hitler ordered the complete destruction of Germany before he was finished. You never know what Putin is going to do.
