Is there an easy way to do this? I suppose I could just copy the files manually but is there a better option? Thanks!

Not familiar with the nextcloud side of things, but I just pulled all my photos from Google photos and imported them all to Immich. I’d imagine if you just have a folder full of images, it’d work the same way. During the Immich setup, you can designate an import folder. Point that import folder at your photos folder that you want to bring in. Once you have Immich up and running, you can use the terminal and run an import from the command line on that import folder. You’ll have to make an API key for the CLI to use, but you can make that in the settings. Immich doesn’t currently support mass importing from inside the UI, so this is the only way I’ve found to do it. The import ran fast for me though, went though 125gb of photos and videos in about 5 mins.

Switching from Google photos to immich was one of the best uses for server I’ve ever implemented. Amazing piece of software and one of the best open sources projects in a long time

Alternatively you can just use external library and point it to nextcloud photos folder. That way you can’t edit or delete files in immich, but you can see them just like any other picture. I upload everything from my phone to immich, but still have some folder organized photos in nextcloud.

The only problem there is that, at least a whole ago, you will get duplicate images. Between the external library and your app upload

If I understand correctly, that would happen only if you upload same files to both nextcloud and immich, but I dont see a reason to do that.

Can Immich show external libraries separately or does it mix all the photos together?

Uff that’s a bit of a deal breaker.

I’ve tried Immich before and it’s fine for uploaded photos because it detects it’s the same photo even if you rename it. But as long as it doesn’t do that for photos from external libraries I can’t trust to put anything into its albums. And if I can’t use its albums to organize and everything is dumped into one big pile it’s a show stopper.

The only workaround I can think of would be to make multiple users and load different external libraries to different users, but it’s not a great solution. The mobile app doesn’t support multiple users anyway, I’d have to logout and login all the time.

There Is a CLI tool to upload folders as albums and it keeps them as their original folders. The CLI didn’t work for me and I’ve read others had the same issue. Found a solution was to use immich-go which is a tool someone else made and it worked for me.

Tried to upload a screenshot but it’s not working 🤔

Thanks anyway but until Immich can deduplicate photos from libraries it’s a no-go for me. If I move or rename photos on folders I would lose album association as it is now.

Tried again and it worked lol. This is albums from folders in a file directory uploaded to immich using immich-go.

All good, just sharing my experience… I’m enjoying immich. 🤷‍♂️

Acronyms, initialisms, abbreviations, contractions, and other phrases which expand to something larger, that I’ve seen in this thread:

    Fewer Letters More Letters
IMAP Internet Message Access Protocol for email
SFTP Secure File Transfer Protocol for encrypted file transfer, over SSH
SSH Secure Shell for remote terminal access

2 acronyms in this thread; the most compressed thread commented on today has 4 acronyms.

Weyyy! Let’s migrate from the most buggy software out there into the papyrus open comic sans photo manager. :)

Actually kudos for the Immich guys, it is indeed a great piece of software… unlike Nextcloud.

Don’t mind him. He’s always there ranting about who knows what whenever software he dislikes is mentioned. Lookup his comment history for more of the same.

Easiest method to summon him is to mention Nextcloud and Proxmox in the same sentence.

I do think it’s blind hate from OP

No major problems for many years running an instance, there is room for improvement though.

Not OP but I found nextcloud to be incredibly buggy and resource intensive when I had it spun up. Now, I had it spun up on top of TrueNas Scale which its own bucket of shit, but I digress. Pushed me to just using discreet services for everything and I like it much better.

I used it for a few years, but it broke a few times, and I had to search online and find an occ command to fix it. It also could break if you didn’t upgrade regularly and skipped versions. Or you upgraded too quickly before a bug was hotfixed.

Maybe it is better now, but I looked into alternatives and found syncthing to be awesome (after I switched from iphone to android). I use samba share for cold storage. Syncthing can take a lot of space since it syncs all the files to all units

Dunno about him, but for me I forget to update it and then when I remember it can’t update because its so out of date it cant resolve something or other, and I end up having to just reinstall the latest version and jump through hoops to get the users files to show up, and then one time before as well as the most recent one that made me give up database problems occurred and I don’t know how to database.

The better question is, what’s NOT wrong with Nextcloud?

Nextcloud is also a perpetually half made project that breaks at every corner and requires a lot of resources. The sync works until you add like a TB of small files and it never works fine again, unlike Syncthing that can handle whatever you need. Also unlike FileBrowser the WebUI is slow at listing files and related operations. The webmail is yet another pile of JS errors and nonsense idiotic stuff like being unable to show a bullet list.

I went into Nextcloud expecting to have a terrible experience, especially with slow syncing speeds which seem to be a persistent complaint.

I was pleasantly surprised that syncing for my 3TB dataset which is a mix of documents, design work, photography, and videos, has worked just as quickly as Syncthing and Resilio Sync on local gigabit network.

I run Nextcloud AIO on TrueNAS SCALE in a systemd-nspawn container with ncdata bind mount from NVME and the rest of the data using External Storage plugin locally.

I only use Nextcloud for Memories (photo app), file syncing and file sharing, so my usage of it is relatively light.

Ahaha you funny guy. Can you have a look at this? From what I’ve seen people either say NC works really well and very fast or that it is complete trash. I really wanted to make it work, and I regularly try the thing again to always end up with piles of javascript erros on my browser.

Did you try out Nextcloud AIO instead of setting it up manually?

I agree that NC has a lot of problems. It’s a good example of an application that tries to do everything and unsurprisingly doesn’t do many things truly well. With that said, I was surprised that NC AIO ran well for me despite the horror stories of NC I’d always read. I’ll keep using it for now, but I could easily switch back to using Resilio Sync, File Browser, and Photoprism.

My main problems with Syncthing is that there’s no official iOS client and that there’s no easy selective sync (Resilio can do this) - using ignorelists gets annoying if you’ve got a large folder structure and many files/folders that you selectively need to sync.

Did you try out Nextcloud AIO instead of setting it up manually?

                Yes, mostly the same.

I agree that NC has a lot of problems. It’s a good example of an application that tries to do everything and unsurprisingly doesn’t do many things truly well. With that said, I was surprised that NC AIO ran well for me despite the horror stories of NC I’d always read

I believe this is a problem of scale, once you get a lot of data and a couple of users things then to go downhill from there.

To make things better NC isn’t polished at all and there’s a lot of moving parts that break randomly at multiple times or at the same time.

My main problems with Syncthing is that there’s no official iOS client and that there’s no easy selective sync

This is kind of the problem with Syncthing for… everyone. What I do with iOS is to avoid syncs, have a central “server” where all your Syncthing devices sync to/from and access everything on iOS through WebDAV/SFTP or FileBrowser running on that server.

Webmail is comically slow and laggy even if it permanently stores every single email in the database. It also doesn’t prune them after deletion and that’s a huge privacy issue imho. The fact that it’s saving all the emails in clear on the database Is concerning for use outside self hosting. Even if it could be set to do end to end encryption for files, in this way the admin has full access to all emails from all users (well, actually, thanks to the impersonation plugin it has access to everything and it doesn’t even give a “admin has logged in” notification).

Also, even if it’s this slow, it’s incredibly barebone.

I replaced it with snappymail which is way faster even if it doesn’t cache any email in the database

I tried many webmail software and I didn’t see any of them storing emails on the database. Afterlogic, roundcube, squirrel, they’re all reading them from IMAP with no DB. But they’re much faster. What’s the point of storing millions of emails on a DB if the software is 50x slower than something that doesn’t do that?

Did you happen to have a look at my post. I believe what’s there is way more than “comically slow and laggy” it’s just yet another time NC overpromised and underdelivered. I’m used to Roundcube and web both know that thing is very fast and reliable.

What’s the point of storing millions of emails on a DB if the software is 50x slower than something that doesn’t do that?

            Yes. It’s a joke.

The Android app is garbage, often refuses to automatically synchronise, and for the past few releases has been displaying an error saying it can’t connect to the server even though it clearly can.

Nextcloud itself is okay but slow.
