If they’re in the wheels that means they’re unsprung weight, which is worse than sprung weight. So even if they’ve achieved the exact same weight, moving that weight from sprung to unsprung makes the car worse.

I’d like to see something like that but published and peer reviewed. That’s just an article, they could be trying to sell in wheel motors for all I know. It does says there’s an effect, and that it needs additional engineering work to iron out. Ride quality and grip were negatively affected. Check out figure 1, subjective ratings of ride quality take a hammering.

Unsprung mass sucks and I noticed a difference eliminating 20 lbs from my car. Adding in heavy electric motors would absolutely be a detriment.

Weighs the same, has an average 150 mile range.

So more than enough for 95% of land rover owners to take their kids to school and get groceries.

yup, which is what 99% of them do with their rovers anyway.

man I want to put this conversion into my honda element

man we should form a community and start shooting the shit about what’s feasible. whether it was this setup (after much thought I’m dubious about this solution because I think my city’s shit roads / pothole system will destroy in-hub wheels quickly) - or something like a tesla salvage running the existing gear train… obviously swap the fuel cell for batteries, same with engine space recovered.

give me 100-150 miles range but 50 loaded / hauling and i’d be happier than a pig in shit.

Let me know when you start the c/ ! I have seen a lot of conversions for Elements, but I think I’ve read that it’s too heavy to electrify

I actually have no idea how to create communities on Lemmy and atm don’t have the spare time to futz with it, but if no one else does it I’ll try to do it over summer.

Yeah, but it must have a backup brake for when the battery is fully charged. Otherwise it would need huge heat sinks to dissipate unused energy.

Or they could just lock the motors and hope for the best.
