We were just talking about this yesterday. What good timing.
This indicates bad design.
Some places, like college campuses, will avoid putting any paths in at all in the beginning, wait a few weeks, and then pave based off where people are already going.
Not always, the gradient might not be good for wheelchairs, and could cost more to level when there is a full budget.
Granted this does not appear to be the case here. Desire paths will always exist, though, as the ingenuity of a subset of the many will always outweigh the few.
Desirule path
I loved the desirepaths subreddit. It’s a shame it’s, ya know, a subreddit.
There’s a lot of these in the UK, I can think of a bunch just in my own town. We seem to really dislike corners.
Well, corners are not very natural, and we were made to traverse in natural environments such as forests or grasslands.
It looks like there’s no walkway along that street anyway, so why go to the corner just to walk on grass anyway?
Edit: just noticed the whole thing is a walking path. Disregard.
