I’d rather have gruel. Ground up hempseed is not that much different from oatmeal or grits, and you can season it to taste good. It’s also a complete protein, and hemp and marijuana are the most efficient carbon capturing plants, and they store 85% in their roots, so we could be doing something about climate change, at least slowing it down by letting these weeds grow everywhere, harvesting the roots, compressing them to a density that won’t float, and dumping them into the Marianas Trench. That carbon would effectively be trapped for a few hundred million years.

I was so confused about what you meant by eating on the Nebuchadnezzar until I connected the dots that this was probably the name of their ship.
My mind had assumed the possibility that their belowground refuge somehow contained the tomb of Nebuchadnezzar and that they would eat breakfast off of it, but no that would be silly.

The average American in the wild is already fat and lethargic enough, probably doesn’t hurt to keep them on a bit of a leaner diet.

Excellent movie. Hugely enjoyed all three of them as a kid even though I didn’t even understand half of the jokes and most of the references made. Should probably watch them again some time to find out what I missed.

There were a bunch more pictures where I got this from, apparently all from the same facility. They all use the exact same tray, no matter what’s being served.
Since this got a lot of upvotes I’ll probably share the others over the next few days. They’re not all quite as awful as this one (it’s by far the worst) but they’re not exactly great either.

the fact that some people aren’t eating has literally nothing to do with grind all of a prisoners food up into a mush just to make sure they can’t enjoy any aspect of it.
locking someone in a cage is way more than enough punishment.

It’s soup on a tray bro, not maggots and rot. The presentation is bad obviously but that is clearly chicken soup.
If that’s all they get for a single meal, then it’s still nutritionally deficient. You can argue exactly where the line falls, but “as long as they don’t starve to death” isn’t it.
I don’t think anyone is arguing that a tray of soup is a well balanced and nutritionally sound meal, but these aren’t the metrics we use to evaluate “food crimes” around here either. There’s not enough context from one image of one meal to draw conclusions about the state of affairs of food in the prison system at large.
I mean, I doubt it’s very good considering what cafeteria food was like in school, but this isn’t enough info to warrant sharpening a pitch fork.

I don’t think it’s free… A lot of states apparently charge a per-day fee that you’ve gotta repay on release.
E: this is (of course) in the US
40 states currently have ‘pay to stay’ programs, but, my understanding is that they’re the minority of prisons even in those states, and generally the ones on the softer side of the spectrum. still very fucked up.
No idea. Never been, and not planning on it either, but I guess nobody really does.
Prisoners should still get basic nutrition. Food is a human right, even for convicted criminals.

It’s lacking for a noodle, but it doesn’t look like bad soup. The presentation is obviously not amazing, but it looks better than my elementary school chicken and noodles did.

My guess would be shredded chicken, which would explain those white fibers everywhere. I certainly can’t see anything remotely resembling dumplings, however.
It’s just the color and black pepper that gave me that impression.
