Hey all. I’m having this issue where a bunch of content replies disappear on me. Or, rather, they are in my inbox, but when I click them to go reply and vote on them in the comments of the post where they are, they are completely missing from the thread/conversation. So to make it clear, they never disappear from my inbox, but they just can’t be seen in the comments section itself, under the associated post.

Is this a bug or expected behavior?

Thanks for any help.

I can see it in my inbox, but not in the thread below the post when clicking through on the comment.

I can’t see it on desktop in the browser either. So maybe it’s an issue with lemmy.world?

          Well that’s frustrating.

It was set to Undetermined. I had set it to English a while ago, or so I thought… But that fixed it. Thank you very much.

(What the hell is this setting anyway, BTW? If I set it to English, will I not see comments made in other languages, or what is this thing for, exactly?)

Correct. You need to have both undetermined and English selected or you’re going to miss any comments without a language specified.

That is the most ridiculous system lmao. Not selecting anything should just result in everything being seen. Not having selected anything should not be seen as a mistake, because obviously you want to see messages…

So any comments specified to be Swedish e.g. won’t be seen unless I select that language? And I can specify however many I want?

Yes it’s caused a lot of confusion. Can’t tell you how many users I’ve helped with this since joining (that and people who have incorrectly identified their account as a bot) and still sometimes I forget and end up trying to troubleshoot other things for people.

They did add a warning that you won’t see most content with undetermined deselected but it’s still not clear enough imo

And yes, you’ll only see the languages you’ve selected (and unspecified with undetermined selected as well) assuming the comment was set properly. And as many as you want. But there’s nothing stopping someone from selecting English and still typing Swedish. And idk how many apps actually support marking language when posting or commenting. Sync certainly doesn’t so I’m unsure which this comment here will actually be set as. Probably undetermined? Because I also have English and French selected and I doubt it knows which.

Edit: upon editing this on website that appears to be the case?

Well you’re a kind person to actually try to help so many. Much love to you for that.

Yeah, I saw that warning, but I think I read it too fast, and read “select” instead of “deselect”. Or my brain somehow tried to reduce the message to only one negative, and got lost along the way. Not the greatest system if you have to have that blaring warning sign, as I mentioned. 😅

But yeah, anyway, thanks again! 😁 Have a great rest of your day!

Okay never mind. The language preference keeps getting reset to Undefined all the time, apparently? I set it to English, go back to my inbox and try to read the comments in context. I don’t see the comment. I visit my settings again, and the language is reset to Undetermined… What do I do?
