My favorite way to tackle these rooms requires a little prep:
- Stand back from the door and throw a random object to keep it open
- Step on a swiftthistle or otherwise activate hourglass trinket to freeze time
- Toss a potion of paralysis into the centre of the room, immediately followed by a potion of toxic gas and then a a liquid flame for good measure
- Wait for time to come back and watch the damage meters/kill messages go brrrrrrr.
If all goes well, you should only have one of two stragglers left at the end to finish off, if at all.
I have 4 methods: Stone of disarming, +20 plate armor, Wand of corrosion, and last but not least, Scroll of Psionic Blast
Or, step back and scroll of rage
I’m new to the game and this happened to me for the first time the other day.
I really panicked but then luckily I had a scroll that cleared them quite easily.
Sounds like it was either a scroll of retribution or a scroll of rage

At least that thief is blocked. If he came up from the other side he’d definitely be escaping with some gear, or you’d die trying to stop him.
I did this on f23 (because I do dumb things sometimes). Lazer eye mobs were on the edge and cleared half of the mobs for me.
Move one square up. Cloak. Wand of lightning until its empty.
