Kicking off this evening’s Xbox showcase, we got a look at Doom: The Dark Ages, and oh my days, it looks awesome.

“Before he became a hero,” the video begins, “he was the super weapon of gods and kings.” And what a super weapon he was. But, don’t let me tell you. You can check out Doom: The Dark Ages’ reveal trailer for yourself below.

Doom: The Dark Ages will serve as a prequel to 2016’s Doom and Doom Eternal. It is described as a single-player action FPS that “tells the epic cinematic origin story of the Doom Slayer’s rage”, and of course, it is being developed by id Software.

Before he became a hero… he had all these cool weapons and moves that he never used again.

He lost them when he got locked in hell or something. When he woke up in 2016, he was FUCKING PISSED

The new Dooms already went heavy into the back story, and those games were pretty great. The old slayer lore stuff was just an excuse to have more set pieces and weapons that were metal AF. And now they’re just going to do more of that.

I remember the elevator ride where doomguy smashes the elevator screen that’s trying to tell the story than carnage.

        Same with enteral.

Look up Doom lore if you really want to see how crazy they’ve gotten with the new games.

A story in Doom is like a story in porn: It’s expected to be there, but it’s not important

All I want is none of that fucking platforming from Eternal. I’ve finished 2016 a bunch of times, but I still haven’t seen the end of Eternal because of all the unnecessary and annoyingly difficult platforming sections. I could deal with a few, but that was just too much.

If they put in platforming, it’s a no-buy from me.

This is a perfectly valid take, and those downvoting you are just butthurt. I’m saying this as someone who enjoys platformers.

Heck, I enjoy platforming as well - in platforming games. Absolutely love games like Uncharted for example. And I wouldn’t complain if Eternal had SOME platforming, like 2016 had as well. Some verticality is nice to have. But Eternal was just too much and too challenging to be fun. I really don’t want to redo a particular jump-dash-dash-jump-dash sequence ten times. Most actual platforming games aren’t THIS brutal.

I’ve certainly seen a fair few topics with this sentiment, so I know others were put off by it as well.

I honestly thought the platforming was a nice change of pace especially when playing on higher difficulty settings. But I can definitely see someone just waiting until they can go on a demon shooting rampage again.

The platforming was alright-ish, though it got old quick. What really bothered me was having to use a specific weapon for each enemy + super limited ammo.

Ever played 2005’s Doom RPG? That’s an oddball title for sure. It was a pretty early phone game. Supposedly there’s some wonky software that lets you run it on a PC, but I never bothered with that. It was really fun when it originally launched.

I have heard of it, but only recently. Never tried to run it myself. Definitely a strange artifact of it’s time!

Sometimes it can be really fun when developers take an existing IP and completely flip the script on it. For example, when most people thjnk about Metal Gear, they think about sneaky stealth missions in real time. And yet there’s also an actual turn-based card battler in the series. Two of them in fact: Metal Gear Acid 1 & w. Came out the serie era as Doom RPG.

Isn’t the lore for his rage about how a demon killed his pet bunny?

It’s my understanding that he is the DOOM64 Doomguy. Is that still valid?

The Doom64 Doomguy is also the original Doomguy. He was the one who was reassigned to Mars as punishment for punching his superior officer, was the only man left standing after the original demon invasion incident on Phobos and further went on to clear out Demios while it was hovering over hell, and then descended to hell itself (Doom 1). He then returned to Earth where, upon discovering that the demons killed his pet rabbit (along with a majority chunk of humanity) goes on a roaring rampage of revenge through “your hometown” (per Doom 1 and Doom 2’s text crawls) and then hell again to ultimately take out the Icon of Sin. In Doom 64 he was sent back by the military to deal with the Mother Demon who was apparently resurrecting all the demons and monsters from before. The Doom 64 Doomguy is explicitly the original one, and was recalled specifically because he survived the previous episodes and had past experience in killing demons real good.

After the Mother Demon’s defeat the Doomguy apparently remains in hell with no way back and continues slaughtering demons and the undead until he is kicked/portaled out by a demon in hell to Argent D’Nur (in a bit added to Doom 64 from Doom Eternal) and ultimately inducted into the ranks of the Sentinels. Then Doom 2016 and Eternal happen.

Doom 3 is unrelated to this entire arc, somehow.

I had to guess, since the trailer doesn’t really specify, this game is probably supposed to be set in the time between the Night Sentinels find the Doomguy and when he winds up in that casket dug up by the UAC. I imagine we will witness the title of “Doomslayer” being bestowed upon him in an inevitable and predictable cutscene midway through the game.

The trailer shows him being fired at a planet’s surface from a Makyr looking ship/satellite thing and we know the Night Sentinels were at some point soldiers of the Makyrs.

I’ve heard it said Doom 3 is sort of meant to be a Doom 1 remake - same story, just told in a more detailed, graphically-enabled way.

You and me, man. Prequels are what they do when they’ve given someone a satisfying conclusion but still want more of him/her in media.

Or, in the case of Black Widow, an unsatisfying conclusion. Don’t forget, you don’t get to surprise kill any connected characters.

Yeah, new character introduced that isn’t in the main series? Well they’re either irrelevant or dead.

I guess going back a few thousand years could be more interesting. But even then…
