The goal of this action is to allow families to stay together, rather than the current practice of deporting based exclusively on individual status. This should be included in congressional immigration reform, if that ever actually happens.

In order to be eligible for the new policy, individuals must have resided in the U.S. for 10 or more years and be married to a U.S. citizen as of Monday. Those who qualify will be eligible for a three-year work permit and will have the same time period to apply for permanent resident status. The application process is expected to open at the end of summer, an administration official said. Applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Congress has done this before for the same reasons. The War Brides Act of 1945 rought over 300,000 foreign women to the US without it counting on immigration numbers. Some of those women ended up being grandparents of US citizens.

It’s a shame it’s not part of our current immigration policy, but that was created by a Republican Senate in 1986.

The timing of the proposal is nearly as notable as the substance, coming just weeks after the president unveiled a restrictive new measure to clamp down on asylum at the southern border. That policy drew sharp rebukes from progressive allies, who accused the administration of adopting a wholly conservative framework toward immigration.

Its not just a matter of disagreeing on policy or ethics.

He’s breaking the fucking law and no one is holding him accountable

The filing argues that the new rules violate US immigration law and the Administrative Procedure Act, which lays out the procedural steps agencies must go through in implementing certain policies.

It’s a slap in the face to Dem voters when he won’t do what we want, but doesn’t hesitate to break the law to be more conservative than Dem voters want.

It’s not just here, he went around congress to illegally “sell” weapons to Israel to avoid a few days delay.

trump not giving a fuck about the law doesn’t mean the only other option gets to do it whenever he wants to act more like trump.

If Biden wants to do shit like that, why not at least use it for good instead of fucking evil?

It’s like the moderate wing of the Dem party has just been waiting for an excuse to be as shitty as possible. And trump is that excuse. And voters insisting we can’t ask for more are their enablers.

How exactly? What are his options?

We have large numbers of homeless people in sanctuary cities. He cant provide funding with his power, and Congress won’t pass legislation.

How about a suggestion for improvement rather than your usual perpetual condemnation?

Personally I think prioritising the status of people currently in the US over newcomers is entirely reasonable.

        Or…

We could just tax the fucking wealthy and not commit human rights abuses while not meeting the needs of citizens anyways?

Biden’s tax plan is focused heavily on the wealthy and corporations, giving more breaks to working families.

          https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy2169

That still doesn’t change his inability to direct those funds to help immigrants. That requires congressional legislation.

I’ll ask again, since you’re always so vocal about what he shouldn’t be doing, what do you want Biden to do to help immigrants?

          Edit: crickets

I fucking hate half-measures like this. Yeah, if you’re one of the 550,000 saved from deportation, or one of the few hundred thousand that got your college debt forgiven, I’m sure it feels great. What would be objectively better is to actually fix the problems requiring these patches. Biden’s made no progress on education cost reform, and has made negative progress on immigration reform, making these kinds of actions pure political theater.

Biden doesn’t control immigration reform. That requires an act of Congress.

POTUS can restrict entry or detain at the border, and determine criminal response of immigration violations. That’s it.

You want more funding for immigration support? Me too. Vote in congressional elections.
