Nah, they went all in on Yasuke being a proven black samurai by getting in so called “experts” in the field. And now that they have been caught they play the “work of fiction” card. They don’t care about Japanese fiction. All they care about is getting money and feeling good about themselves for having inclusion.

Inclusion at the cost of erasing a Japanese male character (from a game that takes place in Japan, hilariously), very inclusive indeed.

Didn’t they sell a One Piece toy as an authentic replica katana for their merch? How do they justify that one

EDIT: Why do I feel like this is entirely lip service and Ubisoft is going to change nothing about the game? Also, I wonder how investors will see this announcement after Ubisoft lied and told them the game is universally praised?

Assassins Creed has NEVER had a real historical figure as a playable main character, EVER. But the one time they do, it has to be Yasuke?

“Yasuke as a samurai is a matter of debate”

No, it is not a matter of debate. There is only one letter that mentions him as a retainer. That’s it. There is no evidence or proof or any mention of him being a samurai. There is no debate.

They clearly wrote part of this to try to salvage Lockleys career, but that guy already did the damage and deserves what has happened. You don’t make up fan fiction and then pass it off as actual authentic historical fact.

This whole thing was obviously released to try to prevent the game being banned/limited/whatever by the Japanese government.

I hope they delay the game and fix all the issues it has, or rename it to Assassin’s Creed Isekai and make the minor tweaks necessary for that.

Yasuke was not “a known black samurai.” He was black, and lived in Japan, but he was Oda Nobunaga’s retainer. That’s all there is recorded about him in the single document that mentions his job/rank. There is no evidence to support that he was a samurai. Which is the entire reason for Japan being upset with Ubisoft.

Making him gay was just an extra. It’s not really all that relevant to the problem, but it also has no historical evidence to support that idea either.
