Explain like I’m an idiot please. Do I need to host anything or is that only for instances?

Do you mean a community?
Like having your own [email protected] but with a different name?It depends on your instance if they allow anyone to create a community or not, there’s a configuration in the admin panel to restrict creating them to only admins.
If your instance allows it, then you can go into the home page and see a button on the left side which says “Create a Community” right above “Explore Communities”.
Then you just have to fill up the data and click “Create”.Also worth mentioning that the community will be hosted at the same instance as the one you’re currently on. So if you’re half Greek and want to create a community about Greek culture, doing so from Lemmy.ca might be a bit weird. One of my favourite Lemmy.ca communities, [email protected], seems however like a nice fit.
It’s not necessarily a huge deal. It’s worth checking that the instance appears to be run by reasonable people who appear dedicated to continue to support it - if the instance disappears, so does your community. And if you disagree with the rules of the instance, that’s not good either. But for the most part, people don’t pay all that much attention to which instance the community they subscribe to is hosted at.
Why would being greek be weird?
I mean… have you seen fraternity pledging? That shit’s wacky.
[email protected] has all the info u need
ask a question of them and they said they don’t support lemmy world.
I think you have to do it from a web app and can’t do it in a Lemmy client.
What type of community did you have in mind OP?
