Just like the the LDS are “pro-family.” What they mean is they are “pro-control.” The only reason these assholes have a family is societal pressure and they only reason they value it is because they think they have control over them. Guess what you fucking nut bags, if all you have is hoard of garbage piling up in your garage there is no reason your children need to stick around or listen to a word you say. That is, if your idea of connection is spouting racist, fascist, bullshit constantly.

The difference between myself and a republican my age is they are still hoping that magical payday will come when mom and dad die.

Yep. Not LDS but years of propaganda that ‘your’ family is ‘people you get to own’ has done real damage. Family values create a fun little hierarchy that many people have been taught to feel entitled to, it’s theirs for ruling over, and taking this socially acceptable power trip AWAY from people who’ve grown to expect it causes BIG EMOTIONS. They don’t seem to see family or societal obligations as real relationships, just requirements to fulfill so they can enjoy a little power. They fundamentally don’t understand that you have to be kind to people and support them if you want them to stay.

The paradox of tolerance is voided by social contract violation.

Those who violate social contract are not entitled to its protections.

    Turnabout is fair play.

This cuts too close to home for me, but man, I would happily donate toward a fund to make this into a billboard in a red state.

it would upset them if they could read.

no but seriously this is too wordy to be an effective billboard.

A lot of Republican politics depend on definitions that they create and modify at their own whims. They put family first, but if you do something they don’t like, then they accuse you of not prioritizing their feelings. Supporting family means supporting what your parents say, or maybe only what one parent says, the one who is speaking.

And then there’s the classic matter of being nice or being polite. If you say something that is discomforting, they’ll accuse you of disturbing the peace. And that ignores the last decade or two or three where you were not living in peace because of the system they created, because of their actions. But they get to define the word “nice” to be something that doesn’t offend them.

Of course this is not unique to Republicans. Any group of people that is in power and seeks to remain in power can exhibit these behaviors. We just need to call them out when we see them, every time.

It’s called realism. The enforcement of a particular consensus reality in which schemas are employed to maintain the control of the powerful. A truly free world is one that is not made “real” by the use of hierarchical power.
