So I looked up the parental status of every member of the House of Representatives from my liberal state of California—also the nation’s most populous state.

With the caveat that one of the Democratic women has stepchildren, not biological ones, 85 percent of the Dems have kids, as opposed to 83 percent of the Republicans. If you exclude Rep. Sydney Kai Kamlager-Dove’s stepkids, which isn’t very nice, it becomes even: 83 percent for both.

I’d rather they didn’t exclude step kids. Maybe don’t even give that as an option for clarification.

It’s not like Vance’s claim stands either way

Right? When else do stepchildren not count as kids? Is that really a necessary conversation?

Maybe the summary was done by AITA veterans wanting to avoid the whole shitshow that can go along with assuming familial relationships between step family members.

James Donald David Bowman, has requested that he be referred to as JD (formerly J.D.) Vance, his preferred (chosen) name.
    Yesterday, James called Kamala “phony.”

You can’t make this stuff up. So I didn’t.

Ok, I’m certainly not one to defend such a prick, but his name change may be more than simply being phony. His father’s name is Donald, so that’s where his original middle name came from. When he was young, his parents divorced and his mother changed his middle name to David so as not to be named after his father. Id say that one was out of his control. As for the Vance surname, that came from his grandparents who he claimed raised him and his sister due his mother being a struggling drug addict. Though it appears that his legal name change to Vance occurred in 2013.

Do with that information what you will.

How do you feel about “James Vance, who identifies as JD”? It’s a mildly odd but not really disrespectful thing to call him, but I bet people who make dumb attack helicopter jokes will lose their shit over it.

I personally do not have a problem with people identifying as whatever they want to be identified by; be it pronouns, nicknames, or “attack helicopters”.

I find it sad though that people make a deal out of this sort of thing at all. We’re supposed to be an intelligent and civilized society; and we have these people who act like spoiled children about so many stupid (to me) things. Anyway…

    You know what?

This kind of reaction, the one of the article, is exactly what doesn’t work.

Retorts with facts don’t work; it’s ignored at best and reinforces the lie at worst. Look up the “information deficit hypothesis“ and why it’s proven to be wrong. It might feel good, if not self righteous, to Democrats, but it doesn’t move the needle.

It’s also why calling out comments like this as weird, creepy and/or stupid does work. It hits back, smacking the lie in the face instead of giving it oxygen, and it’s the smack in the face that gets traction instead of

No one cares what Vance or Trump say. We’ve proven that, but drawing attention to what idiots they are, calling them it, does work because it makes the story about how ridiculous their lies are, instead of a debate about veracity.

This is exactly right. Taking obviously thoughtless statements/insults seriously is a stupid move. It gives a bit more life to lies and accepts completely baseless criticisms as debatable. In debate club you might earn a lot of points. In front of a bully, you’re reacting exactly how they want you to react. You’re giving them the attention they want. Hitting the bully back is common sense. And that’s why they’re whining. The bully always cries when you fight back. Don’t dish out shit if you can’t take it.

I bet you’d love for me to shut up as much as you’d love Vance and friends to stop talking. But as long as as they keep jibber-jabbering like some pitiful fool, I’ll be here:

Print photos of different couches or dolphins and mail them to any or all of these locations:

    https://www.vance.senate.gov/office-locations/

Don’t forget to add little love notes. e.g., “Thinking of you, weirdo💋”

And remember, No means No, consent must be verbally given (even from a childless couch), and consent can be revoked at any time. Be safe people!
