I disagree with that sentiment. Sport should never be political. In 16 years, countries from the West might get excluded when China takes over as the next world power nation. I bet you wouldn’t like that, would you?

Besides, sports can be the only necessary link between countries during such times. Additionally, if Russia participated, the broadcasting would have been drastically different and the opinion of the population would be too.

It does no direct harm inviting the athletes to compete so we should just let them.

But. Sport has always been political. All this fluff about the beauty of sports is just for show. It’s all about soft power.

What Takes you to assume, that russia would Broadcast the olympics at all (or uncensored) even when russian athletes would be competing.

In a ideal world, yes, politics should Not Play any part in Sports, nor in sciences. Hence it is, as we are not living in that world, so we would have to adjust accordingly.

Not at all a response to my argument. They might or might not. My point is that sports shouldn’t be political.

“I thought the Olympic Games were about sport. No longer,” Russian MP Mariya Butina tells me.

“It’s about politics, religion, everything. It’s very sad because the original idea of the Olympics was to create peace.”

“But Russia has invaded Ukraine,” I point out. “That’s not ‘peace’, is it?”

“Russia has been protecting its people,” Ms Butina responds, echoing the official line here that Russia’s war in Ukraine is all about self-defence.

In reality, the Kremlin’s “special military operation” amounts to the invasion of a sovereign independent nation.

Good to see the media not ‘both siding’ for once.

Yeah, we Brits are grandfathered in on account of not aggressively invading anyone’s country (on our own) for at least 60 years by now. Possibly.

You’re kidding, I don’t ever recall seeing the ruzzians at the games before.

This must be a fun little mass hallucination from the great country of ruzzia. We never let shitheels play with us 🤷
