I’ve noticed that most communities mainly show day-old posts with default sorting. Sorting by New or Hot helps with seeing newer posts. Kinda obvious, but I sure didn’t realize until trying it out 😅
Hot is broken atm. There’s an edge case that can happen that stops the hot_rank value decreasing, meaning it never leaves the first page.
Gonna be fixed in 0.18, but yeah, use New until then.
They should tighten the time bounds or make it customisable or dynamic based on the community activity too.
48 hours worked when Lemmy was small, but now there are a lot more posts.
I can’t wait to see all the fixes in 0.18 implemented, it’s going to be huge. 1.0, here we come!
Aha. I was wondering why my All/Hot front page today is still the exact same as yesterday.
I’ve been doing All/Hot as my default view and it seems to refresh often enough, not sure why I’m not having the same problem as others
Could be that with less users on lemmy.one, there’s less people using the search for specific posts. The edge case triggers when a user does that. The hot_rank column functions normally if nobody searches for posts.
Yeah honestly I picked it randomly and had been regretting not going with a bigger instance, but now I’m glad I went with it because I can still read both Beehaw and Lemmy.world so I’m not really caught up in that whole drama. Seems that there are some advantages to being on a smaller instance
I have been sorting by top day and I like it.
Top Day is probably the best sort option so far, but I wouldn’t mind something that updates a little more frequently (e.g., Top for the past 4 hours). Additionally, I wouldn’t mind adding a decay mechanism that gradually pulls posts lower as time passes. As things stand now, if a post is immediately popular within the same hour it gets posted, it’ll remain as the #1 post on Top Day for the next 23 hours before immediately falling off the page altogether the second the post becomes 24 hours old. That leads to stale pages, and if people see the same posts every time they check this place, they’ll assume it’s a dead community and never come back. By implementing something that more gradually cycles content, if I check the site once at lunch and again a few hours later on my train ride home, I should get different content.

i’ve been trying to use top day as that’s typically my favorite filter. however there seems to be some kind of bug where all the newest posts keep jumping into my top-day list at the top. is it just me? not sure where to reach out about this… the posts are spammy porn ones too so it seems like someone else is aware and exploiting this…
That is a bug, there is something about it on github.
i’m having a very hard time using lemmy with this show-stopping bug and can’t figure out how everyone else isn’t just as frustrated as me or why no one seems to be doing anything about it. none of the filter options actually work with ALL and that’s all i really use. i just want to ditch reddit ffs.
Set the page in the URL to Page 0. The bug only happens on page “1” and page 0 is just page 1. You can just refresh the page after that to see new stuff.
It should be fixed soon, their is a release candidate where I believed it was fixed.
I’ve been going on all and sorting by new. Finding a lot of communities that way too.
Also need more top sorts:
12 hours, 6, 3, 1
My problem is not with smaller communities, but the frontpage sucks in active, hot, or new sort. I’ve found New Comments to be a better sort, but I would much rather have the active and hot sorts to be fixed/tweaked to populate fresh posts on the front page. Do we have any ETA on any changes to those sorts?
sort frontpage by top of the day
May be if we had a Top Hour, or Top 4 Hours or something like that.
That gets stale after a while because more people see the top posts, and the get voted even more and stay on the top.
Uncheck “Show read posts” in your settings, then once you up/downvote or actually go into a post, it will disappear for you.
I tried that, but that ended up hiding everything in my profile too. I was trying to find a post that I wanted to get back to, and had to disable that setting to see it.
Oh, yes, that part is really annoying, I experienced that too. This setting should only be in effect in the feed, not everywhere. I’ll create an Issue later if I don’t forget it, I cannot see anything similar.
I think they’re basically broken at the current server load levels. Pretty sure there’s a fix in the next update though.
I’ve been using top:day and hot for /all
I discovered top and think top/day is good for any of the subscriptions, local or all. At least compared to active/hot
Also sort by new comments to get the most active/most popular posts
NewComments has been the best experience for me.
I sort by most popular for the last day. Lets me browse what’s popular while keeping my feed fresh.
I like Top/Day and New Comments
but isn’t top day SUPER broken for you? like - it’s absolutely unusable for me. when i try it gets instantly flooded with new posts such that i often can’t scroll fast enough to keep my position. like … i’m TRYING to use lemmy and really want to but i find the feed so utterly frustrating and no one else seems to have this problem except the friends that aren’t using lemmy but have checked for me. tried various browsers… really struggling with this as i can’t understand how people manage or the how the devs could let this showstopper continue.
Hmmm, now that I think about it I’ve only tried in Jerboa. I’ll check in the Web browser and report back.
Edit: not seeing any issues like that, how interesting.
it’s most noticable when using the all filter also, which I do like. I think lots of folks are using local or subscribed which doesn’t highlight the issue quite so much.
New comments is nice. A good mix of new posts and active posts.
What exactly does PSA mean? I read it a lot in the last months…
PSA = Public Service Announcement
ah, thanks
It will take some time before I stop trying to refresh the front page habitually, but I like the variety of posts I’ve seen fly by on KBIN the past days. Had to filter out some german pages though.
Yeah, what was with that? No other communities in different languages sneaking through, but I’ve blocked several German ones now.
I’ve been doing this, and have been finding it to be a much more enjoyable experience.
Reddit was 1000s of posts a minute, while Lemmy is more like 5 posts a minute if that.
In a way I like it more, feels much more engaging.
New is a good policy for any where, really.
I have set my defaults to Subscribed & NewComments in my account settings, it defaults to that now in both the desktop and Jerboa app.
Yeah great tip, it took a while to occur to me too!
