I took the hit. They’re trying to say that he mixed up “immigrants” and “migrants”. He absolutely did not. You can hear it clear as day

Same. It’s funny when you hit an “article” that is really just a wrapper for a tweets with about a paragraph of actual text remaining.

Yup. Whenever I come across an article with a bunch of blank spaces where tweets are supposed to be, I know the “article” wouldn’t have been worth my time anyway. It’s one of the laziest kinds of journalism.

It’s a hard-R “slip”. Though I think maybe it was actually intentional and he was just testing the waters for saying it out loud on national television tbh

Whether or not he meant to say migrant or n- is irrelevant. It’s up to us citizens to create these stories so the mainstream media knows of the suffering of non-whites.

Yes he did. I’d lay a hefty bet that he rehearsed it. Immigrant and the n-word aren’t close enough to flub. Impregnate and Immigrant? Sure. And you can see him smirk. He’s wanted to say this for a long, long time.

Does this mean we can stop pretending the National Review is journalism? It never has been, but people like to present their stupidity as legitimate discourse. If I had to describe it briefly. I would call it "trying to make being a peasant exploited by your betters seem like a good moral choice using linguistic forms calculated to make the reader feel educated and superior. "

Then just attack his racist comments and not speaking. It’s not clear that’s what he said. There’s plenty of racist people who would never ever in a million years use that word. If they’re really so bad it’s easy to beat them on substance without resorting to gotchas that can happen to anyone

We’re desensitized by our usage in music and casual interaction. Racists are desensitized by their usage in hatred. The only people made uncomfortable are white moderates unwilling to do anything more than vote for the house n----r.

There is no contradiction. Anyone can put their foot in their mouth or trip up what they’re saying. Doesn’t mean they are casual or even rare users of racial slurs. My point is If somebody is saying something racist it’s easy enough to criticize that without resorting to pointing out they used one phoneme of a bad word. It just sounds petty and it doesn’t at all speak to the people that need convincing that the rhetoric around immigrants is unacceptable. Do you want to feel superior or do you want to win?

He gets the entire word out. There’s nobody but him to blame. And also, unless it’s a comedy show, they’re still responsible for editing what they say. They can’t just say, oh the teleprompter guy was playing a joke like this is Weekend Update on SNL.

It definitely sounds like an ‘n’ sound.

And his mouth doesn’t close when he says it, so it certainly looks like an ‘n’ sound.

But I’ll humor you on the suggestion that he just pronounced “mig” funny: Why did he pronounce “rents” as “iggers”?

No, you see, he’s been studying ventriloquism and just fell into the habit of replacing m with n. And also pronounces migrants weird, like he’s only ever read it and not heard it pronounced, since Republicans are all such avid readers and how often does immigration really come up in their conversations?

Exactly! And of all people an editor-in-chief pretty much rarely encounters the written word. That position and the entire industry around it aren’t exposed to words that often so it’s totally excusable.

But I could see my dumb ass doing this, having a long thought with points to hit, saying “mig” (like the plane) then vocalizing “er” to fill the silence while trying to remember how to say migrants because my brain knows damn well it doesn’t start with “mig” even though those are the letters, ohh “mygrints”…

Yeah, this thread is kinda sad. Hivemind conclusion jumping without much thought put into it.

Then people saying he rehearsed doing this? What’s there to gain? You get away with saying a racial slur on air? Woohoo…

Occam’s razor people, is he some mastermind plotting to say it, a racist that let it slip, or mispronounced a word and fixed it on the go like us meat bags do on the daily?

If he says racists often then sure he could be a racist that let it slip. But my money is on the brain having a hiccup.
