Another week in the books. Let’s chat about manga in the general discussion thread! Feel free to use this thread for questions, comments, recommendations, etc.

Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).

Other than the countless various villainess otome/romfan I read, I have been engrossed with Medalist.

While my adeptness at ice skating is on par as my desire to swim between a school of white sharks, I have loved figure skating since I was (ages ago) little.
Other than unnecessary drama for the sake of the story, I am truly appreciating every chapter.

I am also enjoying Seijo ni Uso wa Tsuujinai very much.
I don’t want to spoil anything, so please go and check it out! 🥰

A couple series I wanted to call out this week. One of them I mentioned last week as well, so I will start with that one.

Third week in a row to mention this series. I am caught up with what is on Mangadex now and I am incredibly content with how things have worked out and incredibly sad that the next chapter to be released is slated to be the conclusion. I want so much more of this series. However, just like a recurring theme in the series, I feel like it is my duty to see it off with a smile. I look forward to the conclusion and hope only for the best for the author’s future works.

This series took a torture-porn turn in recent chapters that I caught up on this past week. Like, it spent a lot of time going into details of how a character was tortured. I…am not a huge fan. I had previously written about how I like how open-ended the power system the main character in this series has. However, the way that the author has actually put it into practice has so far been poorly motivated and feels arbitrary. I might keep reading to the end of this little arc to see if it improves, but my expectations have been lowered a lot in recent chapters.

I have continued to enjoy this series and it has changed up a bit after a time jump in recent chapters. I thought this week might be a good time to mention this series again after it has received a flurry of posted chapters. There has been a bit of scanlator drama with this series and it is likely that it will be a little while until chapters resume, making this a mini-hiatus.

I really liked this series and just caught up with a bunch of chapters this past week (they are only 2-4 pages long usually). As chapters have gone on, I feel like the story has taken a backseat. Instead, the short chapter is more often used as a setup to some fanbox-locked spicy content. I get that artists need to eat and this is often how it is done, but I can’t help but wish that there was more story in each of these chapters since they are so short.

I tried to spend a bit more time on my backlog again so I’ve got some new things to write about this week, which is nice. Here’s what I managed to check out since the last thread:

    • Akari - short (5 chapters) story about family, belonging and craftsmanship. It’s really sweet and has some great panels throughout.
    • After the Rain - an older series by Mayazuki Jun, author of Kowloon Generic Romance. It’s about a high school student in love with a manager at her part-time job. Not as interesting or pretty as Kowloon but it’s fun enough, will probably stick with it for a bit longer.
    • Ressentiment - 30-year-old fat loser decides to get a virtual girlfriend, said GF turns out to be a bit special. I’m a bit torn on this one as I’m kind of interested in the primary mystery around the girl but at the same time I’m not too hot on the humor and really dislike the character art - especially in real world portions where characters are purposefuly drawn extra ugly (both for laughs and to provide bigger contrast between real and VR). I’ll probably drop this one unless something really spectacular happens in the next few chapters.

On a different note, after trying the new [Discussion] tag myself and seeing it used by others I realized I actually do care about this debate. This wouldn’t be a problem if Lemmy (web) would have a proper tag system but as it is now I’m joining the [DISC] resistance.
