      Boy, they really liked using black construction paper in the 24th century.

          Before the advent of HDTV, production thought they could get away with covering sections of panels with black paper.

            They could, they didn’t just think so. We certainly didn’t see it when we were watching them when they first aired.

          The giant display on the back of the bridge reflected everything… including cameras and stage lights. So in certain shots, they would tape black construction paper in key places on the display to obscure the reflection. On 19” CRT TVs, you really couldn’t tell. In HD, it’s painfully obvious.
