I think I’ve decided that the Pixel 6 will be my last Google device I own. It’s a tough decision considering I’ve owned exclusively Google phones since the Galaxy Nexus. Unfortunately, the past two Pixels I’ve owned (Pixel 3 and Pixel 6) have had extreme battery issues, with the Pixel 3 becoming a spicy pillow a year after purchasing. I had to have that phone repaired twice through Google’s service centers, and now my Pixel 6 is having random moments of reaching 45°c. It randomly powers down, is unable to connect to cell service, and was so hot to the touch last night on a simple phone call that I was concerned to even touch it.
Google’s customer service team promised a replacement, but I just looked at their tracking system and the addresses are reversed. I’ve spent nearly two hours in chat trying to work through this.
The kicker? They just asked me to join the Pixel Superfan club and accepted my application. Yeah, not sure I’m an advocate at this point.
I went Pixel1 -> Pixel4a -> Pixel6 -> Pixel7
Honestly, the pixel 6 is the worst of the bunch. I saw a black Friday deal to trade in my pixel 6 for a 7 and I jumped on it. The 7 seems to fix all of the issues I had with the 6 (random slowdowns, battery issues, unwieldy size). Now the 7 is probably my favorite one.
Maybe I got lucky? Or maybe you have to skip the “redesign” releases and wait for a year of refinement? (pixel 6 was a big redesign compare to 5)

I guess if I have to choose just 1 thing it would be reliability. I never have any problems with it ever. I can go weeks without restarting it. It just works… All the time.
For me it’s the iPhoneification that’s turning me off. Removing the headphone jack, making the interface bigger, ditching open source, cutting out features, etc.
It sucks because Google and Samsung are kind of the only ones with a good track record of updates and they’re both following the same path.
Does Samsung still shove a bunch of uninstallable bloat on their phones? I’ve been considering a galaxy for my next upgrade but I hate not being able to get rid of all that crap companies seemed determined to shove down our throats
I’ve been eyeing an S23, but I have the same concerns. DeX is the reason I’m thinking to take that plunge, but I’m worried I’ll hate the experience.

My experience with DEX was that it was adequate for day to day, but was not a PC replacement - sort of like having a Chromebook type experience. It is very smooth and usable but it depends on what you are hoping to do.
Yes they do. My wife got so sick of her Galaxy’s bullshit that she got a Pixel 7 like me.
Removal of the 3.5 was the stupidest move ever.
I still have a pixel 3a, no issues yet.
My wife has a pixel 6 and I just don’t like it. The whole interface changed for the worse and I can’t find a redeeming reason they made any of the changes.
I’m riding this 3a until the wheels fall off.
3a is a great phone, I still have my 3xl and it still works great.
My son is still using my Pixel 3. The battery degraded considerably over the years, but it’s still usable. My Pixel 5 had major heat issues, particular if I took a lot of pictures outside in the summer. I traded it in for the 7p.
Except for the fingerprint sensor the 7p has been a solid upgrade, and honestly the in screen fingerprint sensor has been working well for me. My only complaint is that the compass is garbage. I have to recalibrate every time I open the navigation interface, even if it’s mid-journey and I’m just pulling the phone out of my pocket to see which way to turn at the next intersection.
At this point I’m no longer what I’d consider a fan, but I stick with the Pixel because it’s still better than the alternatives. Hardware complaints aside, I’ll take the software over Samsung’s crap any time.
Yeah, honestly google needs to step up their hardware quality game. It has easily been their biggest problem over the years. Nearly every pixel has had some sort of odd hardware issue.
Once I can afford a pinephone I’m ditching this device. I want a free and open device with no proprietary software and hardware.
I had a 5 until last week. I skipped the pixel 6 because it was the first gen of using their own soc so I suspect this will be the root of the problem. I just bought a pixel 7a and it’s great. It’s my first budget series Google phone which is fine with me now it has wireless charging.
The only thing keeping me with Google is the camera. Once Apple builds a phone with a camera I like, I’m jumping. The lousy battery life and the lousy smartwatch options are have soured me on the brand.
You lose one and you gain one. I’ve gone google g1 > g2 > google Nexus > Nexus 6p > iphone > google pixel 3+ > essential ph1 > pixel 5 > s21u > s22u > pixel fold
Pretty sure I have missed some devices in there but 🤷♂️
How is the fold in comparison to the rest of your journey? I’ve been waiting for it and am curious for your perspective.
My path has been nexus -> nexus 6 -> essential phone -> pixel 4a, still going strong.
I liked the Nexus 6. I miss that big ol’ whale of a phone :(
