Baier later asked Harris if she supports “using taxpayer dollars to help prison inmates or detained illegal aliens to transition to another gender.” The question comes after a 2019 questionnaire filled out by Harris came to light. Her responses, which she gave while serving in the Senate, indicated she supported taxes being used to fund gender-affirming care for federal prisoners and detained immigrants.
Harris responded to Baier by pointing out that incarcerated people received gender-affirming healthcare under her opponent, Donald Trump.
“I will follow the law, and it’s a law that Donald Trump actually followed, you’re probably familiar with it now,” Harris said. “It’s a public report that under Donald Trump’s administration, these surgeries were available on a medical necessity basis to people in the federal prison system.”
One of the few times comparing herself to trump was a good idea.
Still would like her to say she’ll follow the Leahy Law tho
Providing medically nessecary care to prisoners of the state just feels like basic humanity.
There’s not exactly a lot that is humane about our prison system…

We throw people with mental health issues in jail with no meds for months pending trial then drop charges on the daily. Just release them on the streets with no money or way to feed themselves, let alone see a doctor and get back on meds.
I’m not saying we can’t fix one thing if we don’t fix everything, just that prison reform should be a much bigger topic than it is.
We ain’t reforming prisoners, our justice system just produces more criminals. It’s hard enough to get a job and a place to live, imagine if you had to do it with a felony, and you had 8 hours to solve it. It’s starve or do more crime.
Shit isn’t going to fix itself.
Why ask a candidate for a number like they’re an encyclopedia or something? She’s running for president, not chief of remembering trivia factoids.
It’s looking for a gotcha moment to take out of context. During the last Australian federal election the then-Opposition leader (now Prime Minister) was asked what the Reserve Bank cash rate was and he didn’t know off the top of his head. The media and now-former government tried to beat it up as a big problem and proof that he wasn’t fit to be PM, which is ridiculous (though his actual performance as PM so far is underwhelming). It did lead to a great moment a couple of days later though when they tried it on the leader of the Greens, who just replied “Google it, mate”.
It’s like when they ask someone “What is a woman?” like it’s some gotcha. Whatever you answer, they’ll find a way to twist, exaggerate, or simply lie about.
Asking for specifics is not disingenuous. People want to know details so asking for them is reasonable.
We have also seen people like Bernie Sanders rip off number after number without making mistakes, on multiple topics in a long form interview.
Its not some super power to rehearse and practice what you need to do until you remember it.
That interview was a joke. They wouldn’t have constantly interrupted Trump like that.
