I definitely saw the vegan community on that instance on my feed a few times and was wondering if it is as bad as the other one that got some attention a while ago. Maybe it’s the same and they just moved to their own instance, I couldn’t be arsed to waste the time and energy to look into it and I guess this post did the work for me now. So thanks, OP.
OP is one of those people from the drama that you are referring to about vegan cats on lemmy.world, I and my actual friends who run Vegan Theory Club server were not a part of it. I had previously defederated lemmy.world due to difficulties moderating as I believe the instance is too large and not well gate kept and the problem posts, trolls and down votes were primarily coming from there.
I extended my server to allow space for them as vegans and they used it as a “life boat”, this is a regret of mine as this person acts with extreme immaturity. I am now changing the site and how we curate content due to this.
Lemmy has a complete inability to handle disagreements and discussion in a mature way. As soon as you differ from a mainstream point of view you get posted about in meta communities to target harassment and people wield fediseer to silence you. My views as posted and discussed in the thread screenshotted here are my own and not representative or required of all members in my community to adhere to besides being against hierarchy in all forms. This includes speciesism, military of any kind and authoritarian “communism.”
If you do not want to participate, that is fine by us.
I’m not vegan myself, I can’t afford to live that luxury due to my personal life circumstances, but I very heavily reduced any sort of animal based products where I can, and try to buy organic ones where I have to.
So from my perspective, I would see non militant vegan communities positively as they can, for example, still share good knowledge about vegan alternatives to others, even if they’re not following veganism as a lifestyle. After all, any sort of reduction would still result in less animal harm in the end.
However, what’s mostly in my and other peoples face are those hyperbolic, super delusional and on top of that extremely aggressive vegans who act like they’d almost want to cut your throat for not being one of them.
We see the same kind of highly polarized and radicalized point of view with the Israel & Palestine conflict too, to the point where people are now simping for literal terrorists, just because they’re against Israel. It’s like the world is collectively losing their minds.
Not that expensive at all. I’d say the meat-eaters are the ones being agressieve, killing and mistreating all those innocent animals, heating up the atmosphere and minimizing nature as they go. All to pleasure their taste buds.
I love how you believe to know about my life circumstances to the point where you can make such generalized statements on what I can and cannot do, to tell me that “we” are the aggressive ones. Hypocritical, entitled, and highly ironic. But thank you for proving my point.

It’s not just on Lemmy or the Fediverse though. It’s the same on Reddit or YT too, or when you look at what people demonstrate for outside nowadays.
I hear you, and agree it happens there too, but I think Lemmy is particularly guilty. The insular nature of federation and the origin of Lemmy in the first place seems to attract lots of very zealous folks.

I’m just sad they’re advocating for Russia to invade Ukraine and claiming that both us election candidates are the same.

Yeah that would classify as “tankie shit” to me. Anyone with half a brain (like myself and I’m not American) can see that there are fairly large differences between the two political parties (and some very striking similarities). They are after all all Conservative, right-wing parties.

I actually decide not to defederate because of your position and I thought we were friends but also wanted to have a discussion about what I thought as well. My disagreement with you wasn’t a good reason for you to post about this in a meta community and draw support for your cause and manipulate the thread.
I really wish I shut down the instance when I wanted. I really regret allowing you to push me to grow the instance beyond what I was comfortable with and I am deeply disappointed by your behavior. Please leave me and my community alone.
