From Dave Verbyla

A very low-light R7 photo with the RF200-800mm lens. ISO-6400 because this was at dawn. Short-eared Owl. Photo denoised and edited using TOPAZ and ONT Photo Raw. Probably the lowest light photo have ever taken at 1/1000 sec shutter speed.

Truly a superb photo, it jumped out at me even before I clicked through and read the description. Thanks!

I’m glad you enjoyed it! I like being able to find things that really grab people’s attention, especially when I see new names in the comments.

It never stops looking so cool! Shortie photos especially always tend to have that intense gaze right into the camera.

Oh, it downloaded in less than a second! 😜

I only take pics of captive owls, as I have no patience, nor a camera that isn’t also my phone.

These and the above photo are from Dave Verbyla, who looks to live in Alaska. Here’s some more Shorties I saw on his feed.

I was like “how do you even take a photo like that?”

But I guess AI de-noising changes the game. When there isn’t enough light for a high quality image, it draws the rest of the fucking owl.

Modern tech can definitely be a boon to the arts when used tastefully.

Checking the comments on his post thread, he also says he used manual focus, which the face looks very clear considering the darkness, so he must have timed the shot really well too.

The best of man and machine making the best of this shot.
