FYI, DeForest Kelly was 46 when this episode was filmed.
I guess back when people married and had babies at the age of 18, he could have been a grandfather.
I just figured a pissant kid would refer to any male adult as gramps. Also smoking and lead poisoning aged people horribly back then.

He went the Steve Martin/Christopher Lloyd route of looking old long before he was old.
I remember the 90s sitcom trope of a 10-year-old kid asking someone in their thirties if they still had dinosaurs “back then.”

Shore Leave is such a great episode. It gets almost no love.
