My favorite “unskilled” job is cooking.
Yeah anyone can cook but try cooking on a Friday night rush while half the customers treat you like subhuman garbage and your coworker who thought cooking was “easy” is crying on the make line floor because they can’t handle it all.
Fun fact, the people who maintain the airplanes we all use are labelled unskilled labor, as a cost savings measure by the airlines. They lobbied for it, to pay them less. Think about that next time you’re on a plane.
AC maintenance for American Airlines is union
Former AA employee here
Union is nice, but it is still held back by the industry average, and there’s as many union as non-union airlines. It’s been a lot better since Covid for us but my point still stands that the skilled labor list is BS and as you well know there is a lot of skilled work in this field, but it’s categorized incorrectly as a way of keeping costs low. From what I recall, Delta was the biggest player in that lobby effort.
So unskilled the billionaires should be able to do it.
…
Why don’t the billionaires want to work?
Plus it’s been a race to remove skill from labour for 200 years. Journeymen are now technicians. Technicians are now operators.
True. A key aspect of industrialization is that skilled labor is replaced by machines everyone can handle. It takes more energy but less skill to make concrete than working with stone so concrete houses are the way of the future (as in the future of the past, you get it)
Push a broom over some floor. Keep doing it until the floor is surprisingly clean. Then rub wet yarn over the same floor until it’s shiny and all the sticky spots are no longer sticky. Don’t forget to pick up any objects that the broom couldn’t get and to move any objects that prevent you from getting the entire floor shiny.
Try doing these two tasks twice a day every day for a week. If you’re able to complete these two tasks in under 8 hours, you might be qualified to be a school custodian/janitor! If your back survives the week, you just might have what it takes to make a career out of this.
If your back does hurt at the end, and you believe you’re performing “unskilled labor,” you are not allowed to receive any training on how to improve your techniques. If you learn any techniques on your own, you’re cheating by gaining skills.
