I’m currently using an Orbiter 1.5 and it’s pretty decent but I’m looking for an upgrade. I like the light style extruder sitting on the gantry over a Bowden system as it allows for flexible filament and has much better control over retraction.
Is the 2.0 a significant improvement over the 1.5? Should I get a new hotend as well with it?
Right now I’m using a MicroSwiss all metal hotend and am quite satisfied with it.
Print speed is okay I guess.
You are literally the first person that I have heard about who is satisfied with a microswiss hotend. Most people say it is overpriced and not very good compared to others (like the Dragon hotend)
Hmm. I bought it a few years ago when there weren’t many all metal hotends. It’s never caused any issues.
Back then it cost me about 80 euros which was a bit steep but acceptable.
Back then my reasoning was that I didn’t want any PTFE close to the hotend, fearing offgassing and limiting my options for filament types.
Don’t know where you heard that but micro Swiss hotend has been really popular until dragon hotend came out. I’m not saying it is better than dragon but was known to work great. About prices, it might depend where you live as I just checked right now and dragon is more expensive than micro Swiss.
Why are you looking to upgrade? Are you chasing detail, speed, or something else?
Detail. I’m looking to achieve tighter tolerances with 3D printing, going for dimensional accuracy.
Don’t know which printer you have but if your main interest is a direct drive setup over Bowden, chances are that you can setup your orbiter 1.5 as direct drive by printing some adapter.
The orbiter 1.5 is already a DD design
Oh, then I guess I didn’t understand OP correctly as I understood he has a Bowden setup with his orbiter. Thanks
Nope, it is not significant. The only thing that really stands out is the runout sensor with loading function function that is sold for 2.0, if you dont need that, print ninjaflex 24/7 and your 1.5 has no direct issues there is no need to upgrade.
What about the filament feed path? I have a 1.5 and the only thing about it is that I have to hand feed filament changed because of the space in the path between the gear and the bottom going towards the hotend
Before doing anything extruder related watch this. This guy went way overboard so we don’t have to.
