Due to the lack of consumer protections, the US now accounts for 51% of the global data industry.

The source auto-populated when I pasted the quoted text. That’s neat.

It’s crazy the amount of AI image and video generators popping up right now that are “free” if you would just be a sweetie and give them your email address. I had one recently that only allowed gmail, presumably to make it harder for people to just use an anti spam inbox. People just don’t realise how valuable a fresh, active email address is. If I see anything like that these days I nope out immediately.

Well, potentially a lot, specially when sold for crossing data with other sources. I worked in a place willing to lose millions of dollars a month, without profit, hoping that eventually in 1 or 2 years the few bits of personal info they were capturing could be sold.

Also worked on another place that aggregated all public info available for everyone and allowed with 2 clicks understand many things about a person and all their family for example.

So you don’t use anything that requires an email address? That’s everything lol

Not to defend wanton personal data sharing but a major difference is that giving money away deprives someone of that money while copying data deprives them of nothing, or at least the downstream effects are much less felt. This comes up a lot in the ethics of piracy.

while copying data deprives them of nothing

it deprives them of their privacy
and depending on future laws, it may deprive them of their freedom or job opportunities,
or UBI, car, home, or health insurance, or medical care, etc.
