Ok it’s a bit off topic, but I think the story of his 9th Symphony is even better. The Shostakovich’s time, there was a sort of mysticism around 9th symphonies. Starting with Beethoven, 9th symphonies had a tendency to be among a composer’s greatest and most epic works, and/or being one of their last works. After Beethoven, other examples include Schubert, Bruckner, Dvorak, Mahler, and Vaughan Williams. So Shosty came to his 9th and the expectation was that he’d follow in that mold. But Shostakovich really did not get on well with Stalin, who had many times censured him, and didn’t want to do what Stalin wanted of him. So the 9th symphony is basically a parody of those types of grand symphonies.

      Relevant video.

Weird because there’s literally no source that states he was celebrating Stalin’s death. He wrote the piece about Stalin when he died, but it certainly isn’t celebratory in tone or spirit. Shostakovich also never said he was celebrating Stalin’s death. I’m assuming that’s just how you interpret the piece.

Every morning I check in to Google news hoping to see the same. When Putin dies the world will literally erupt in a giant party and I’m stocked with all sorts of party favors and have my days off reserved!

On a side note, I wonder how it must feel to see and know that majority of the world will have a party on your death day. This has to be one of the most painful feelings in the world right? Assuming that monster has any feelings at all.

I think the joke would make more sense if the guy picked up the newspaper, unfolded it to see the entire front page, and then put it back and never bought it, day after day. The seller would still get mad because the guy never buys it, he only looks at the front page headline.

For a year, the man just looks at the front page without buying the newspaper.

Why does he never die? the man asks. I bet it’s because I don’t buy the paper. If I buy the paper, then the man will die sooner.

So the man starts buying the paper.

Im just trying to imagine the level of state level lunatic copium that unleashes when Vladimir Putin dies. Imagine the theatrics and clownery that was North Korea when Kim Jong Il died, except its a country that’s been radicalized and mobilized by fascist wartime propaganda, I quite think they’ll start shooting each other out of rage and grief.

The entirety of NATO will have to preemptively go to the equivalent of DEFCON 2 upon learning that the tZar has died.

Think of .ml as a Russian-run communist version of Reddit where the moderation is exponentially more strict and what you’re allowed to talk about is determined by those that run the instance.

Essentially it’s a near perfect example of what it would be like if North Korea and Russia united into one giant shithole of a political ideology, and then yarfed up its propaganda into one self-contained social media site.

There is no one “Lemmy”. Different people host different copies that sync with each other, but they all have their own moderators. Lemmy.ml is run by “davel” so just do a web search for “davel mod” to learn about the reputation they’ve earned.

I think an easier way to understand it - anyone can host a lemmy instance, and they will talk to other lemmy instances. It’s like if anyone could make and host their own subreddits on their own websites, and they would by default be accessible from Reddit.

So I have a lemmy.world account (and I think you do too), but the person you responded to has a lemy.lol account. We have accounts on different websites, but they use the same language and can talk to each other. We see this conversation on lemmy.world, they see the same conversation on lemy.lol.

It helps to think of instances (Lemmy.ml is an instance) as an imaginary layer between reddit the platform/company and subreddits. Themselves miniature versions of reddit with their own subreddits, often overlapping thematically with the subsubreddits of other mini reddits. Sometimes these mini reddits have an over arching theme or vision, and sometimes they are just a hobby hosting exercise. But all of these miniature reddits can theoretically exchange posts and comments by choosing to federate with each other, by virtue of being under the same reddit platform.

Now remove reddit entirely and change the platform into a protocol and you’re close enough for government work.

It’s the instance run by the creators of Lemmy, people on .world love to constantly redbait about it and other left-wing instances because they tend to enforce rules against bigotry while also critically supporting a lot of US state enemies.

I don’t see people being censored around here for complaining about Russia being a capitalist misogynist transphobic shit hole (many such cases tbh), but homophobic insults against Putin? that’s not going to fly because it’s still homophobia, and doesn’t even amount to real criticism.

People mistake the fervant opposition to the US empire in these spaces as blind support of these state enemies, and that’s just missing a lot of nuance and boiling it down to “lemmy.ml funded by Russia/China”

That said I kinda wish I was getting getting paid by Russia/China, here I am working a day job like a chump to pay rent.

It’s hilarious that you pretend to think people don’t like .ml because it’s anti-bigotry. All of the major instances that I’ve seen are anti-bigotry. Including- and especially .world.

In fact, I’d love to see you provide evidence of people from .world being upset at .ml’s anti-bigotry stance.

What people hate about .ml is easily proven in the modlogs. The numerous comment removals and user bans as result of the vague catch-all “rule 1” violation- a violation that they never explain in the logs. That instance and its moderation is legendarily known for being heavy-handed and unfairly biased against everything they disagree with- and unlike your false accusations, this is provable as I said- with a quick visit to the modlogs.

post removed from .ml for insulting people:

temp banned from .world for insulting people and trivializing the ongoing genocide

doesn’t seem particularly heavy handed or unfairly biased to me

there’s also been quite a lot of people at .world going on the record as pissed at the position blahaj took on misgendering/neo pronouns. that’s the same position you can find on .ml, I’ll ban for that myself if I see it in a comm I mod

In fact, I’d love to see you provide evidence of people from .world being upset at .ml’s anti-bigotry stance.

I would love to find one person complaining about .ml that doesn’t have a post history littered with misogyny/transphobia/chauvinism

My late best friend would always buy a newspaper when travelling any journey more than an hour. I’d joke and say that he was too young to be such an old man, but I think that made him like it more. Whether you’re buying it or going to the library for it, I think that many people who enjoy physical newspapers relish the ritual of it

I do enjoy the layout of newspapers. Having articles alongside other stories helps put them in context and encourages one to read things they might otherwise skip if they had to be clicked into.

I often do research in old microfilmed newspapers and it’s nice to know that, say, WWI was going on in Europe at the same time as Baby Week 1916 (a US effort to reduce infant mortality by education parents on the importance of not killing their babies through poor sanitary and nutritional practices)
