I never see this.
My parents cared too much about their outward appearances. They’d put fear into me for a long time and then beat me and/or destroy my things at home.
'Murica!
Never seen that in my country even once in my whole life. I saw a guy beat his dog once and lots of people, including me, stepped in and held him till the cops came.
I live in the US and never saw this, but I don’t frequent Walmart. So not sure if it’s an inaccurate stereotype or not.
I’ve called the cops before, when it went beyond the point of spanking (which is legal) and into abuse.
More than a few times. People don’t do it like they used to, but some people just don’t care. Last time, I saw a woman hit her kid in the head with an open hand slap. But it was loud enough that people came around corners wondering what it was, and the kid had been knocked down by it.
The very first time I ever called the cops about something like that, a dude was literally stomping on his kid’s hand. I was too young to realize I could have stepped in, but I sure as hell went to the pay phone outside the pizza place and called.
You’re an absolute star for taking action mate, you did what you felt was necessary for the safety of someone else. Those are commendable actions for sure.
Stepping in if you’re in the US means a good chance of being shot.
If anything sketchy is going on anywhere I immediately leave (and call the cops if something is bad enough), and I don’t hang around to get shot by the cops.
Note that they mentioned “pay phone”. That was a time pre getting shot over nothing. The good old days.
Those days have always existed. We just have better optics on it now.
No, they definitely didn’t exist like they do today. Always existed but not nearly at the same frequency.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mass_shootings_in_the_United_States
The conversation is about cops executing people, not mass shootings.
Their first statement didn’t specify who was shooting.
They did, actually. They mentioned both the police and the abuser. Still no mention of mass shootings, though.
The real world is not an internet chat room. The vast majority of Americans aren’t carrying guns.
I have 2 friends that got robbed at gunpoint.
A significant portion of the population in red states is concealed carrying too.
people in chat rooms can’t shoot me. People IRL can.
Some shit needs to be immediatelt addressed. If the kid’s trashin merchandise or attacking customers then yeah sure shake em out of it. But smacking a kid for whining or being a smartass? Nah you’re an asshole.
Fun fact: kids learn from their parents and the environment around them.
If the kid’s trashing merchandise or attacking customers it means it regards violence to express their feelings / to get out their frustration as the norm.
And we usually learn what’s the norm inside our households.
Don’t beat your kids and don’t let other beat theirs. It’s never good for the kids.
I have a 3 yr old border collie. He is THE sweetest boy, born into a poor home where they didn’t have enough money to keep feeding him and no one was interested in buying him when he was still tiny, I got him at 5-6 mo’s old, I’ve had to learn the meaning of patience with this extremely sweet boy. But now, he is a very well developed adult dog, and has made it clear he doesn’t care if he dislocates my shoulder with repeated lunges at things he just wants to smell. I tell this story right now in relation to the picture, because sometimes, that damn little asshole finally deserves to have their ass beat, and you know they was acting up more than usual because they thought they could get away with that shit in public!
Ah yes, beat up your dog because he “deserves it”. Instead of training or using a anti pull lead. Great logic
I am legally obligated to speak up/report.
Mandated reporter squad role call!
Less pixels!
Must be the US thing.
Maybe 25 years ago it was more visible.
Now, rare. But they probably beat them in private. Why a mom in a walmart and not a dad in a whole foods tho?
Both happen
No argument there, but my question still stands. Why is poor (i.e. shopping at walmart) mom the paradigmatic example instead of rich dad? Just because our society likes to punch down doesn’t mean our memes have to.
Would you have asked “Why not a mother at Walmart?” if your version had been used?
One topic per meme.
Depends, what did the little goblin do to deserve it?
Option 3: join in?
there is no safe word
there is no limit
OK boomer
Everyone knows millennials are the new boomers
People assuming that you’re being serious with this very obvious joke. 🤦♂️
Lemmy has no humor unless it’s “America bad. Hurr durr!”
I mean, joking about beating kids isn’t really that funny?
Even if it could be, this sure ain’t it.
Anything can be funny if your sense of humor is dark enough.
Child abuse is only a joke if you consider child abuse funny.
Not really?
Something needs to be funny to be funny.
The thing about humor is that it’s subjective.
Okay. The thing about humor is most people suck at it.
Not obvious enough I guess.
Rot in hell
There is no such thing, but I always thought you people were supposed to burn there instead of rotting.
For you: Decay painfully in the worst place your society commonly imagines.
