Title pretty much says it all. I just got accepted for a new job at a new employer and they’re going to be running a check on my driving record. However my liscense is expiring shortly so I want to get it renewed. Ideally I want to get it renewed before I actually start the new job because once I start I will be working durring DMV hours. But I don’t want to delay things with my new employer or iritate them by messing up the MVR check.
So can I safely get my drivers liscense renewed now or should I wait until after I start at the new job and the MVR check is done?
Get it renewed now if you have time. Unless you’re super broke there’s no reason to wait.
You’re far enough through the process that something like your license expiry date not matching the record you submitted wouldn’t be a hassle, and even if it was, looking at the date they can immediately see the reason why without even needing to ask you.
It’s better to have it renewed than risk it turning expired. That will definitely mess up your driving report.
It doesn’t actually expire until March. I start the new job at the start of February. So I’ll still have a bit over a month to get it done even after I get the new job and they run my records. It would just be more of a pain because the DMV is only open durring my new working hours. It’s still doable though because I could always just swing in on my lunch break.
Honestly I’m probably worrying about this way more than I should. If I wait to get it renewed then I just swing by the DMV some day on my lunch break. If I renew it now it would probably be fine and even if it did screw something up it would probably take a single email to HR to resolve it.
I can’t imagine how renewing your license will affect anything on their end. Your driving record and license number will remain the same.
None of the relevant information changes (DL#, your actual driving record, your identity, etc), it’s mostly just to update photo and address if that’s changed, then give you a fresh card with a new expiry date. This will have no effect on your employer doing a driving records check. May as well do it while you know you have the time available.
They did want a picture of my liscense but, thinking about it now, that was probably just for my I9. Like you said, they should only need the number to run my record.
As long as you don’t let it expire, it won’t even register on any record-checks. Even then, it likely wouldn’t even be an issue unless you got pulled over without a valid license. If that never happened, then you’ll probably be fine.
Renewal has nothing to do with your driving record.
Honestly I’ve only had to renew my liscense once before. I wasn’t sure if any of the information that they would require to pull my record would change when I renewed it.
At least in my state, my license number doesn’t change even after renewing. They’ll still be able to pull your record even if you have a freshly renewed license.
No worries. Especially in the US where our credit report is made to feel so important and yet when you do good fiscal things it hurts your score, or knowing that doing the right thing is often punished here, being worried about being responsible is understandable.
No, it won’t.
At worst, your record will show that you’re about to go expired. Once the renewal processes, they’ll see when you renewed and all that.
As far as I know it shouldn’t, and I also agree with @[email protected], seems better to have it renewed rather than expired👍
a simple renewal won’t mess up their driving records check. it’s not even worth a mention to the new employer or anything. just do it and get it done before its expiry.
I very much doubt it would but it most likely depends on country/region.
