My daughter gets very limited monitored phone time on the weekends or long trips to play art and learning games. She loves to play with filters, too, but I don’t want to grant her access to something like Snapchat that overly-beautifies her image and will wind up giving her a complex.

Does anyone know of any kid-friendly filter apps that will turn them into animals or make their faces look funny, without all the weird filters that are unnecessarily adult or sexy?

Yeah, you probably won’t find any. My phone has a stupid AI “beauty” filter that makes me look exactly like Kim Kardashian and I hate it. While I hate my appearance, I do not want someone else’s. And I hate how one person is considered “pretty” and you need to be her to be pretty. Annoying as hell. Unrelated, no one asked.

I’d honestly just recommend online-image-editor.com but it’s a website not an app, and is very vintage internet. Of course one of the best photo editors is made during a time when the internet was about fun and not competing and money.

Tl;Dr online-image-editor.com, make your child a bit more tech savvy.

Unfortunately most, if not all, of these AI filter apps offer some sort of beautification, as it’s very popular and a good source of user acquisition

It looks like the best you’ll find is something like B612

On Android it’s Family link. You can:

    • make a schedule like “1h max mo-fr, 2h max sa-su”
    • add time or lock the device manually (that’s our usual bargain point with kids - do stuff, get 30 mins)
    • lock some apps completely, or unlock to ignore all limits except nighttime (can be also set up)
